Just did Legacy Duathlon (R-B-R in Bountiful, UT)... second run was PAINFUL!

Hey all... been biking for several years as a hobbyist... the wife started signing herself up for a couple sprint tri's, so I figured I would try some as well.

This past Saturday, we did the Legacy Duathlon (5k run, 22m bike, 5k run)... they messed up the measurement (ended up being 2.2m run, 22m bike, 2.2m run)... dont really care much about that since we all had the same course to run...

Anyway, my transitions were both under a minute... can probably shave a few seconds there, but my second run was AWFUL!!! My legs HURT and I ran a pair of 9:30 miles...

What do I need in my water bottle (or in my stomach) to keep my legs from failing later in the competition?

First run was 16:07, 1:03 transition, 1:01:35 on the bike (YAY!), 0:47 transition, 19:10 run. I first started feeling the leg pain at the bike turn-around point (about 47 minutes into the competition).

Depends on how you are training. After doing my first tri last year, then a duathlon, I fell in love with the duathlon. Now I brick train every other week to get my body used to the changes of events. If you don't train your legs to run, bike, then run, they will revolt. With that said, you probably need a sports drink and some gu gel on your ride. If the legs were cramping or achy, I would say that should help.

Skip the bricks, just do more of both (or more running and harder but less biking if you have time constraints). As for nutrition, you don't need anything for that length, you felt like crap because you pushed too hard and didn't have the fitness to keep it up, not because you didn't eat a gel.
