Tricks to staying motivated in the winter?
I know its not winter yet, but when the alarm goes off at 5am and its pitch black outside and snug in my bed next to my girl, I am having a hard time getting up and out to get out and run. I have made it twice this week on Sunday and Monday, but I have a feeling its only going to get harder as the weather gets cooler.
What are you doing to stay at it?

I make myself get out of bed at 3:30am every morning regardless. If I don't get out then I don't get any exercise for the day and that makes me feel much worse.

Peer pressure. If you have to meet some one, then you are more likely to make a work out because you don't want to leave them hanging. Classes can also help because there is a schedule. I like doing spin classes and group workouts.
You could also try doing lunch or evening workouts if you are having a hard time getting up in the dark.
Or you could just enjoy the time off.

For me, my own ravaging guilt drags me out of bed. I am very good at finding excuses (and sleeping next to a sweetie is one of the best excuses) NOT to get out and be active, but I know that the rest of the day I'll feel gelatinous and unattractive and less healthy and be really disappointed in myself.
Also, I think developing a routine works. If you force yourself to do it every day for a couple weeks, momentum will carry you forward. You'll be less groggy at that time in the morning, and it'll feel less horrendous to get up and move. Also, you'll have built up a good record of getting up early and being active, and I find that when I do that, I'm more likely to keep it going.

Hmmm. You probably have the same weather as I do. I recommend mapping out your year and putting something big that motivates you on the calendar for early spring.
Although dark, this time of year is garden of Eden weather. You have a unique opportunity to train year round with some cycling longs and jacket. We have no snow, under 7" of rain all year.
Move long cycling rides on Saturdays to the afternoons when it will be 60 or 70 degrees midday in a month instead of 95 like now. Treadmills, indoor gym pools and weights are good winter activities too.
if you are looking for race for the spring, come down to Phoenix. Sprint races start up in February and theinaugural Leadman 125 is in April. I am going into base shortly Leadman.
Good luck!

It can be tough to stay motivated in the winter but a good routine will help see you though.
Swim
For the early mornings I find a Lumi lamp helps me get out of bed, the pool is no different in the winter once you're there!
Bike
If it's pooring with rain then a spin session or turbo training session can be a good alternative although it's still nice to get out on a cold crisp day (avoid icy though!).
Run
I like to enter fun and muddy running racers over the winter (or team navigation races), not only does this keep me motivated but it gets my base training done and makes my legs stronger for the coming season.
Also get some new kit that winter specific! This always works for me

I trick my mind in stages. I say to myself, "I'll just get up and that's all." Once I get up I say to myself, "I'll just get my shoes and exercise clothes on and that's all." Once I get my stuff on I say to myself, "I'll just go outside and walk/sit on my bike and that's it." Once I'm out and ready, it's a lot easier to run or bike or whatever.

This off season I've been doing the insanity cd workout in the mornings and riding on my indoor trainer for 30 minutes minimum in the evenings. I also use a cable crossover machine for my upper body strength. This is my 4th year in Triathlon.
