Help the helper

Hello people, I'm not a Athlete in any way but just a helper.
My girlfriend has in the past Ran and swam with a small amount of sprint triathlons under her belt.
She has decided to train towards a goal of a Ironman, and I suggested for her first attempt not to buy a specific tri bike but use a good road bike?
When I say good road bike do you think there is any great benefit in spending a lot more than just a entry level bike to train and use for her first effort?
What benefit would she get by spending a extra thousand pound over the entry level bike ?
Hope it's not a brain dead question !, :-)

Cheers.....
