Greetings,

My wife just dropped a hint that she wanted a GPS watch for her tri training for Xmas, specifically one that tracks swiming also. I am totally clueless and wonder if anybody on the Tri form may have any suggestions good or bad. I spend most of my time on the Road thread (41) so please type slowly as not to confuse me I am some what budget conscious but a happy wife...

No such thing as "best", otherwise all the pros would wear that one. That being said, the Garmin 910XT is on my Christmas list.

Thanks, I was looking at that one and it seems pretty nice. Im having a hard time finding anything comparable from other manufactures specifically, the swimming aspect.

I have the Garmin 910XT with the quick release kit for training and racing. It's excellent and I would recommend it all day long. It's a bit pricey but it does everything.

Every test done has said the 910 is the best one out there. I have one and love it.

What about the Garmin 310? I'm in the same boat as wife wants one for Christmas.

I've got the 310 and find it okay for all but swimming. Is waterproof but cannot pick up GPS signals underwater... Not sure if the 910 can either.

Just please don't go the polar route..I had a Rcx5 and hated it....garmin all the way

The GPS works surprising well in the water. The track is a bit jagged but usable. The big benefit is that the 910 is waterproof so you can wear it for the entire race.

After more research it appears the 910 XT is the way to go. What's an extra $100 or so for being totally waterproof and counts laps too?

Thats what I was thinking. Like Rider98 Glide, I was looking at the 310 but the 910's "water" features seem better. My wife loves swimming and I think this would be the icing on the cake

Pulled the trigger on the 910xt today. With her club discount and a years worth of bonus points it came in about the same price as the 310. Thanks for the input.

I scored the 910 back in November. My wife knew she was getting a training watch, but she didn't know how good of one she was getting. She was suffering from a training lull a couple of weeks ago so I told her to open it. She absolutely loves it.

I had a PM about the quick release kit. Since I'm not allowed to respond because of my number of posts (seriously?) I'll respond here...

The quick release works really well. I raced quite a few times with the 910 and the face snaps into the quick release band tightly. Put it on after the wetsuit. Once you get to t1, the face comes off and goes on the mount on the bike. Takes about 2 seconds. The empty band stays on your wrist for the bike. At t2 you swap it back. It's easy, it's simple and works really well...

Amazon has the 310xt for less than $200 right now including HRM. Worth it?
I'd be using it primarily on the bike (>90% of the time) but would like the flexibility of having a run option without bringing my phone. Any opinions? Do the watches do as good a job on the bike as a Cateye wireless would?
