First Triathlon in the books

After finding reasons not to do one for a long time, I finally just decided to do it no matter the case. I don't do group rides on bikes and I only commute to and from work as my only cycling. As far as swimming, welllll.. I suck. But I knew that. I only reckoned myself a decent runner if anything.

There were 107 entrants and I was thoroughly intimidated by the 10,000 dollar bikes people were setting up in the transition area, but I figured at least I got to see some good eye candy. I'm a 220 pound /100kg 6'3" (189cm) guy, so I guessed that to be my disadvantage as well.

Anyway, my official times were as follows:

400 meter Swim - 12:20.0

15K Bike - 30:17.6

5K Run - 22:48.5

= 1:05:26.2 (29th Place Overall, 12th place in 30-39years old category)

For comparison, first place overall was 7:53.8 Swim, 27:40.1 Bike, 18:45.7 Run.

Overall, I was happy. I noticed that the bike and run were both LONGER than the stated distances. I think I ran almost 5.2K for instance in the run according GPS. Who knows, seemed long though. I bumbled around on the transition to swim (it was last for some reason), but really I just need to lose a little weight and focus on getting the swim time at 400m under 10 minutes as a start. I can get under 22 min 5K pretty easy as well.

We'll see. I had fun though. Always fun to catch another sport bug!

I'm a runner first (started a year ago Tuesday), and doing my first Sprint Triathlon next month, so I'm far from an expert.

However, I gotta say congratulations on finishing your first, and kudos on a pretty impressive 5k time, especially as the last leg of your first triathlon. My best 5k is 22:54, so you'd have kicked MY butt, at least.

I don't know if this applies to your event, but there's a good post on the DC Rainmaker site about how actual distance run can vary considerably from the "official" distance. Basically, the accumulation of your "weaving" on the course, taking anything other than the "optimal" turn, and even passing other runners can add up to a remarkable distance on a run. I try to keep this in mind as I go through a course, because sometimes the difference in a podium spot or PR can be a few seconds.

Great job! I understand about being intimidated about expensive gear-- when I had a real crap bike I was always motivated to pass expensive ones and when I got a nicer one I was always bummed to get passed by crappier ones.

Remember, it's the motor!
