Single speeds or Gears... That is the question

Hi,

Just recently had my bike stolen (Ok it was a crapy hybrid). But I'm now looking to move up in the world to enjoy the pleasures of riding road bikes...

Now my question to people out there is.... (probably not worth asking but here goes).. Does anyone have a bad word to say about single speed bikes???? I've searched high and low on the internet to find out if there is anything I need to know before spending upwards of £500 on a single speed... But everyone seems to treat them like the greatest invention since the wheel.

I remain slightly sceptical because although I heardly used my gears on my hybrid, it was nice to know that on days (not many, I admit) I wasn't feeling up to it, I could drop my cog grear down to a 6...

please someone out there advise me

You should be ok on a single speed, you get used to using just one gear quicker than you might think (or I did at least when I started riding fixed ). Because of the hills where I live, I sometimes prefere a freewheel single speed over a fixed hub, maybe a flip flop hub/wheel is something to think about?
