Garage security question
 

Hi all. Just purchased 2 new Hybrids, will be storing in a newly refurbished brick built garage in a block behind our house . My plan is to fit a 2/3 bike wall storage rack (black and red one from a***on) with a Pragmasis wall anchor fitted in the middle or just below. Not sure how much weight the wall rack will take, unless I beef up the fixings but for securing the bikes I was going for the 13mm x 1.5m (or shorter if poss) chain to go thru both frames. Then I'm thinking the 11mm chain (2m) to go through all the wheels.
Just wondering if that is too much weight for the bracket, ie 2 bikes, 2 x chains 13mm x 1.5m and 11mm x 2m. Or maybe replace the 11mm chain with a Braided cable type 10mm as it's going through wheels?
Open to suggestions and alternatives!

Does the bracket have a weight rating? If the presence of the chain is going to cause a problem why not bolt eyes either side of the bikes, and have a single chain that goes from one eye, through wheel, frame, wheel and to the other eye? It would mean you could get either bike out independently of the other and not add any weight from the chain to the bracket.

Hi thanks for the suggestion. I've just cancelled the original rack and gone for a Thule one. It looks chunkier plus has all the specs. which the other didn't. This one has a weight rating of 40kg which should be fine. Just need to suss out the chain scenario.

If the garages are in a block behind your house the things I'd be concerned about, if someone managed to get into your garage, is that they could either steal parts (the wheels being the most obvious targets) or just lift the whole lot off the rack and chuck it in a van. If they can do that then they can cut whatever chains you've put on at their convenience.

Depending on how far the garage is from the house it may even be that an enterprising scumbag could show up with an angle grinder and cut the chains. That's where you get into a place of putting enough security on the bikes that it's not worth someone's while to come out and steal them. Obviously for a £500 bike the levels of effort considered "worthwhile" when it comes to a theft attempt are much lower than for a £10,000 carbon fibre racing bike.

Fair comment. The Pragmasis ground/wall anchor and a 13mm chain should I'm hoping be a reasonable obstacle. I'm hoping! Plus I'm thinking a second 11mm chain also through the anchor and all wheels. With the anchor off the ground and behind the bikes it should be awkward for a determined thief.
