........I thought no one could never top 'Pugsly' as the coolest
name, ever and here they come out with a 'Big Dummy' ! :roflmao: :roflmao:
Redd Fox is smiling in his grave !

Waxbytes 10-01-06 11:05 AM

Oh Boy! Stokerless tandems, what will they think of next!?:)

4SEVEN3 10-08-06 09:39 AM

Thats the coolest bike.........espically with the sidecar action!

I had to laugh at the name, as I sue that term fairly often!

aadhils 10-09-06 10:11 AM

No I don't think i'll ever get it. What I might get though is an xtracycle for my LHT...

MacG 12-04-06 10:52 PM

The Big Dummy should be available around May 2007, going for $820 for the frame and fork. I've pretty much decided that I will be building one up when they become available, so I emailed Surly to get some more info. Here's the specs that they came back with:

headset: 1-1/8" threadless
bottom bracket shell: 68mm wide
rear dropouts: 135mm spacing
seatpost diameter: 27.2mm
front derailleur clamp diameter: 28.6mm

Heck yes I'm waiting for this bike! Like someone said, this is the ticket for grocery shopping! I can't wait for it to come out! This is what the bike market needs, a practical bike at an affordable price (sort of) from a major manufacture (sort of again). While Extracycle is cool, just not enough people know about it. You can bet I'll be first in line to build a Big Dummy!

actually, you can get it with a stoker...

it's an electric assist motor that runs on rechargeable batteries. I'm thinking that with this accessory it just might replace the car in the driveway!

There is a picture of the latest Big Dummy build on the Surly blog (http://www.surlybikes.com/surlyblog.html). It looks magnificent. I waaaaaant it! I waaaaaant it! Their latest estimate for when the frames will become available is December. Not that that should matter to me since I don't have any money.

I'm not thrilled with 26" wheels. I like the tire selection in 700c better.

I'd go the LHT/Xtracycle route myself, but those come made for 26" wheels in my size too. Feh.

FXjohn 08-19-07 01:15 PM

Bump. That is a REALLY neat bike.

littledog 08-19-07 03:28 PM

That would be too long and heavy to carry up and down two narrow flights of stairs. Living in an affordable apartment does limit my options for a bike like that.

I'm really on the fence about it. Probably after I move again (to a place where I have decent bike storage without fear of theft.) I wanted one when they first started posting it in the blog, but since I have a LHT waiting to be made into a full-loaded touring rig the BD will have to wait.

"Jam yesterday, jam tomorrow, but never jam today!"

Surley keeps pushing its release date farther and farther ahead.

Like Joelpalmer, I'm on the fence about it, too. I've had my bike since '89 and can REALLY justify a new one. Just can't afford it yet. Maybe I'll get lucky for a change and they'll push the date out just far enough for me to save enough money to get one. If not, I'll probably repaint my old bike and opt for the Xtra and call it a day.

donnamb 09-23-07 11:59 AM

Well, at least Xtracycle doesn't have to worry about lost sales from the Big Dummy. :)

What? The blog on 7/31 says it was sent to production, so the schedule is out of their hands now.

Elkhound 09-24-07 09:39 AM

I have an Xtracycle on my Fuji Monterrey, and love it. The only problem I have with it, really, is that the extra length means that it is sometimes awkward to bring inside, as at work, which is why I seldom ride it to work.

I am planning to get a Big Dummy with a Stokemonkey as soon as they both become available.

According to the SurlyBlog, the release date is now February 2008. http://www.surlybikes.com/surlyblog.html

The "show" referred to below is Interbike 2007.

Big Dummy
One of the best one-liners of the show we heard was "my favorite new product for 2006 Interbike was the Big Dummy". So why isn't it available yet? The very first prototype we got arrived at the show last year with exactly zero test miles on it. After which, we had two more rounds of prototypes built before we were satisfied with the result. In between each of the three rounds of protos came a thorough testing period where we rode them, modified stuff and swapped parts to determine everything from ride quality, load capacity, how it handled with different loads, how a Stokemonkey motor mounted onto it, how thick some of the tubes should be, how the large boxes will be handled by freight companies and countless other small details. It's a much more complex project than even the Pugsley, so the timeframe from 1st prototype to finished and available product taking a year and a half doesn't really sound that long. We're glad we took the time to perfect this bike because the end results that we're riding right now are going to make all of you crap haulers out there happy. So we're expecting these to be available to you by Febraury 2008. We'll also be posting a lengthy spew for the blog page in the next month about all our opinions and ideas about building and riding your Big Dummy or Xtracycle.
The bike has changed from the first iteration shown at the 2006 Interbike show. For a current pic check out:

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would they? Unlike other utility bike like the Kona Ute, the Big Dummy was specifically intended to use Xtracyle parts. If anything it should increase sales since there will be a frame designed around the Xtracycle package. People who don't want to fiddle with "build your own" option (which I readily confess includes me to a point) can get the utility of an Xtracycle without having to worry that they didn't hook the base frame on right.

Sammyboy 10-17-07 04:40 AM

I think that's precisely DonnaMB's point.

Who said that if you order your Xtracycle add-on that you have to insall it yourself? That's what your LBS is for.
