This is nowhere w/in your budget, but might give you an idea about an mtb + xtracycle setup.

I just checked, and the Freerad is £275 here, so the equivalent of $550/.

Have you considered European alternatives to the Xtracycle? Like some of the Dutch bikes or the Danish Christiana 3 wheeler. Look here for some ideas.

I have, but none of them offers quite the combination of passenger carrying AND cargo handling that an X does, plus, they're WAY more expensive even than building an Xtracycle on a brand new Surly Big Dummy frame. If it was just the cargo, I'd probably buy the biggest old tradesmens cycle I could, and build new wheels for it, but the combination is tough.

I don't think $20 will get it shipped to the UK!

I've been thinking about an X, too. Right now I've got for donor frames:

A bridgestone City Limit (nice bike, but pretty nimble....)

Raleigh M30
something called a "Outfitters" brand moutnaineer
trek 800
older Bianchi cromoly "tange B" frame. old enough to have that silly bottom mounted brake.

The city limit is the nimblest, and lightest, so it might kinda suck to make it an X, but then again, do I want to add ANOTHER 5 pounds on top of the x? The outfitters thingy is next in weight, cromoly frame but I can't find a thing about it.

Lots of good suggestons in here, I'll probably use a b67 and wider mustache type bars, and I'll watch the chain

xtracycle base bike

Let's say I have a choice of base bikes (both mountain bikes) with which to build an xtracycle. These bikes are exactly the same, except that one bike is one frame size larger than the other bike. The smaller frame is the correct frame size for riding offroad, while the larger bike (2 inches larger) is the perfect size for commuting.

Which one would people recommend as a base for an xtracycle conversion?

I'd go larger.

I first built my xtracycle up on my mountian bike and it worked fine, but I went out and bought a new bike this spring, a Marin Novato, just for the xtracycle and went up a size. Now I have a, more, comfortable xtracycle and my mountian bike back.

Definitely the larger for the work bike, and you'll still have the smaller one for your hobby.

The xtracycle is so made for the commuting kind of riding. You'll end up riding it for a lot mroe things than you thought - unless those trips would be offroading I'd go larger.
