Smile Anyone want my extra-cycle? (Free to a good home)

I have decided to give away my home made extra-cycle.

I would be happy to pack it up and ship it anywhere in the USA.

This would only include the triangle, cross-bar, bolts, kickstands, nuts, and the rear wheel with with deraileur and other hardware.

I can include the basket cage if desired.

I once I pack it up, I will weigh it and then I can give estimates for shipping.

I was thinking about asking people to write a short paragraph or two explaining why they need it, and then I can decide who I'll give it to. Winner must still pay shipping.

    I'll bite

My reasons for wanting an extracycle are kinda lame but here they are:

    I'm uberly-fascinated with hauling stuff.

My bob trailer just can't handle some things like bed frames.

I bought a frame with the express purpose of making it into an xtracycle but never could justify the price (yes, I'm cheap).

I'd eat up the attention I'd get from riding around on your custom made extracycle.

I would love to have your Extracycle. I am a carfree person my entire life due to my medical disability. I have severe anxiety attcks when I get in cars and have to do EVERYTHING by bike. I could use this to haul stuff home from the grocery store, furniture store or wherever I go.

    Hi there,

I desperately need an extra-cycle, but I live in Canada.
I`m sure there are plenty of people in the States that have just as many good reasons as I do for needing an extra cycle, and it would cost them way less to have it shipped, plus through a lucky stroke I can afford to build one myself.
I just wanted to comment and say that giving away your extra-cycle is a really nice thing to do for someone that has a real need for one.
kudos to you, and I hope that you won`t miss it too badly yourself! (At least you can always build another one right?)

I would love this xtracycle becuase i am a poor student and i cannot afford many things. I use my bike and my bus pass for all transportation needs. If i had the extracycle I could use it to get groceries and other necessities that i usually have to take the bus for. I would no longer be limited by the bus routes and wouldnt have to constantly ask favors from friends to drive me places if I need something, such as getting my printer fixed [which i have been putting off for weeks]. thank you

All sound good so far. I want to hear a few more before I decide.

I would like to point out that this extra-cycle kit will require some creativity with regards to installation and adjustments.

You will need to supply your own chain, and make your own adjustments. Be aware that the deraileur is functional, and the shifter is rigged to the rack frame. so it is all contained within itself =)

This has the obvious benefit of adding gears to a single speed or coaster brake bike !!

    =)

The basket is not included in this give-away. It is way to bulky and heavy to ship.

You can add your own basket to the rack, or modify / remove / customize the rack any way that you want.

I think Kj should have it. I have enough bikes, I think I could combine two of my bikes so pass my chance to someone else.

i would love this, but after looking at your build thread, i am not convinced that i am capable of rigging this up to my only bike. i have almost no bicycle mechanic knowledge :/

It is not difficult at all, but of course if you`we got only one bike.. Could you find another one? Charity, dumpster, garagesale or similar? I made two so far, from scratch. If an old lady can do it you can do it! Only extra tool you need is a chaintool.

I made my first "longtail" slightly different than this. Had to force the two rear dropouts together and thereby could not use the frame as a normal bike later.

First time I looked at this way to do it I found it strange, but then realised it is smart. Just made one for my son, used this system. Made it from a "mixte like" ladies offroad frame. I like these bikes to have a low toptube, becouse sometimes you want to adjust the heavy load while holding the bike on your own.

I use my first longtail to pick up my son from school. He is on his own bike, but he`s got a friend who often walk, so the friend is riding with me.

I made the bike to give my dog a ride. He is fit and enjoy running next to the bike, but sometimes I want to go far or fast. Then he is sitting on one side (like on a extra). A bit strange with 26 kg on one side and nothing on the other, but you get used.

I just found a alu full suspension bike that I am going to use the rear triangel from to reduce weight. Want a similar "main frame" as my son has got. The first one I made is going to my refugee friends to try to inspire them to make more longtail. They need them.

I am also thinking of making a longtail folder. Has got all I need in the basement
Get one more bike, borrow a book or two from the library and post questions here.

If you are sure it is too difficult try to make a trailer.

Why are you getting rid of this bike?
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

I found that that my trike is more versatile for my specific load-carrying needs.

Mostly because I never made any side-bags for this... If I would have added side bags, I could have replaced my trike.

I just decided to keep the trike instead because even if I had the side bags, the trike is still more stable.

It was a fun experiment, and I learned a lot from building it. I could easily build another one and add anything I want if the need arises.

I may even use some of my knowledge to extend my trike !!! (keep an eye open for that thread soon ! )

Heh, I'd've said yes, but I actually scored an used xtra recently, so I'm as happy as a clam.

Insofar as clams are stereotypically happy.

I'm interested. I have done a lot with my bike so that I can go to the grocery store, but I did it because I can't afford an xtra. If I could have afforded an xtra, I wouldn't have done it, but the work I have done shows that I am innovative with limited funds.

I don't weld, but I started with sturdy frame made from 4130 Chro-Moly and made sure that the weight went on the frame, not the hubs. I used to have a 3-speed that had the weight on the hubs and it was not much fun to steer.

Here is the bike I built up:
    http://www.ericvey.com/Workhorse/photo_gallery.htm

I have since changed the handlebars to North Roads and the tires are Big Apples inflated to 30 PSI since have to ride on a lot of brick streets.

While this bike is satisfactory, it could be better. It still beats a trailer.

    edited later-
I was thinking about this. Maybe the reason that people don't want to speak up is because they don't want to grovel. That's what put me off, the tone. I live in the South and I am Po' but Proud. People don't want to have to "prove" their worthiness to receive something and to post demanding that they do so is demeaning.

The other thing that turned me off was that I thought I would have no chance. Someone would come in with a sob story, like the one that won the Hannah Montana concert tickets.
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...r=HOME_3655973

I don't want to appear to beg for someone's charity. All I can do is assure the owner that it will be put to good use and cared for. Same as the cat I have that was advertised "free to a good home" and the dog I got from the shelter. The cat I've had for 11 years now and the dog only two. They get along with each other.

I think that people that buy dogs and cats are nutz. There are so many doggies and kitties out there that need a home.

I still have not weighed it, but I have a bike box to put it into =)

    Ok, update...

Friend of mine was in a wreck and I didn't have any time or energy to box up the extra-bike...

Hopefully this week I will get it done and weighed. =)
