Road Frame Xtracycle?

Does anyone here use a road frame w/ 700c wheels rather that a mountian/cruiser frame with 26" wheels? Any issues to speak of? I have an old Schwinn Passage (lugged Columbus steel) frame that I was thinking of using. Any comments?

I'm putting a Free Radical on my Trek 7200 with 700c wheels. It should be arriving in the next few days and I'll be writing up a review in the next week at http://austinbikeblog.org/. If you aren't sure, check out my write up.

Otherwise, go for it. I know it is less common, but there are people running these things on 700c wheel frames. Just make sure you are using good quality rim wheels with at least 32 spokes (36 would be better.)

I installed a FreeRad frame extension kit to my mid-80s Schwinn Sprint with 27" wheels and 630-32 tires. There is about 1/4 inch clearance at the front and rear crossmembers of the FreeRad, and a fender just fits below the SnapDeck. With 80 psi in the tires and a Brooks Champion Flyer saddle the ride is great! Since the picture was taken I've installed Wald North Road bars with Shimano bar-cons on Paul's Thumbies and the more upright riding position suits this old-timer just fine. $14 V-brake from Nashbar had just enough adjustment range to center the brake pads on the rear rim. Have fun!

Bob P.
