Sorry it was, yesterday, I hooked up my "bike carrier/utility trailer" and headed out to pick up a 90's MTB to turn into my "utility/trailer tugger". It was only 13 miles RT but there was a HUGE HILL and the road had LOTS of traffic so it was not a lot of FUN! Still I got home in one piece. Here's a photo of my "new to me" 95 Research Dynamics Coyote Two, I'll be getting rid of the "fat knobby tires" very soon and adding a rear rack, I've got the trailer coupler on now so it's "Tow Ready", LOL! The best part is the cost, $45.00, sweet!

I'm a new rider and have been riding to the bank, post office, and other close errands for the last few weeks. This morning, I did my first grocery run. The folding basket worked worked well, but I think I'll probably get another one for more space and to balance the load.

Biggest lesson learned: The best time for street riding in this small Southern town is when everyone else is at church. Both the streets and the grocery store were deserted.

Yesterday I removed the horns and rear rack from the little Giant and put them on the Trek. I love the Giant, but it has a 16" frame and I am 6'3"...

Rode to drug store to get some supplies. My wife rode with me on her Huffy MTB. We got back in time to avoid a downpour. A nice little run and her first outing on her bike this Spring.

After commuting in to work, brought back a borrowed wheel truing stand for a wheel build.

Yesterday, I put my lawn mower in my trailer and hauled it to the lawn mower repair shop. I thought that those burley mechanics would have raised an eyebrow, seeing someone bring a mower on a bike, but no. I did get looks from people on the street, though. As it turned out, the shop doesn't work on electric mowers, so I drove it to Staples, picked up a ten-pack of cardboard filing boxes, and came back home. Sorry, no picture.

I picked up 4 bikes today...that's a bit too much for this trailer so ended up making 2 trips. All I can think is how much weight is on that little Free Spirit rear bearing. I'm 240lbs, my kiddo is 25, throw in all steel bike, and of course an extended hitch trailer with wheels that are biased to the rear so a lot of trailer weight is also on the rear wheel. Anywho, got a sweet 3 speed Free Spirit out of it, makes it all totally worth it.

Local pub needed some extra beverage cooling capacity for a motorcycle poker run, so I delivered it on a bike that would feel at home amongst the hogs.

Rode to Kroger yesterday on the Murray 24" girls freakbike 10-speed. I had a dude that makes tallbikes on the side weld some bracing on the mtb handlebar-seatpost to reinforce it for my 230lb weight. It handles well and is comfortable for my 34" inseam now.

Spotted a cool Subaru Baja on the way there at Lowe's and had to take a photo.


Picked up a tray of ten burger patties, a gallon of diet ice tea, a bag of frozen fries, and a couple other items. A nice little ride, 3.0 miles round trip.

In the middle of seeing how many brewery tasting rooms we make it to in one day on bikes and we get a call that the GF horse is out of hay. It was stop and go get the truck or head out for a detour. The bike trailer is the same place the hay is, about three miles from the pasture where the horse lives. Good thing I had been to a few good tasting rooms before attempting.

Realizing I had planned a golf outing the next morning it made sense to leave the trailer on nad bring the golf clubs to the last brewery we were visiting before heading home.

It was a lot of work hauling all that delicious meat and cheese to the park... (which is only across the street from the Italian deli).



The Pug is a great bike for running errands and doing shopping... save for the fact you can't go anywhere without people asking what the hell is that bike for ?

My answer is, "fun".



The rollout on the road is surprisingly good and the drop bars really improve the position which is more comfortable (if you own my back) and the overall feel of the bike.

I've been biking for recreation for about 2 1/2 years. This year I got a touring bike and got serious about commuting to work; seeing how many consecutive days I could go with out driving (now that I've got a way to carry 8 days worth or uniforms, it's a lot of days between drives). As I get more into it, and read more on bikeforums, I've been doing more and more with my bike.

Today was the first grocery run:


Next step will be a trailer for the monthly Costco trip / our 2 australian shepherds.

Had to take my car in for service today. Put my bike on my Thule rack, dropped the car off and rode the 3.5 mi. home. Will do the reverse to pick up the car later.

Grocery shopping, 6-7 mile round trip pulling the Burley flatbed, per the usual. Sometimes I go to another town to do grocery shopping there, it's a 26 mile round trip, and pleasant for the most part.

It wasn't today, but a couple of weeks ago I hauled 4 gallons of 31% hydrochloric acid 4 miles from the pool store to my house. The box was covered with scary CORROSIVE warnings. The guy at the pool store warned me repeatedly about keeping it upright and sealed. It was in the front basket and played hell with my steering. I could have done it in a car, but as I told my wife, where's the fun in that?

Quick grocery run, to prove that the buckets work. All three full of soda and OJ, chips on top. Bunjee doesn't feel secure so I'll be bolting/lashing them on more permanently. Slowly getting the hang of it. 93deg so we're sweatin' some.

Dunno if this would be a "utility" run or not,but with the Xtracycle loaded up with WAY more camping niceties than we ever woulda needed* last eve,took the boy on a "S24O" bike camping trip to a local city park (not really supposed to camp there,but we got the go-ahead) about 8-12 miles away...




*if you think that's bad,packing too much to camp,you shoulda seen all the crap I'd pack every week to go hauling freight when I was a trucker,LOL!

We took a camping tour last weekend, and we discovered that towing trailers is an excellent alternative to hauling panniers. Huge success.
