Looking for a strong front rack
So I'm looking for a wide, strong, fairly affordable front rack. Occasionally I need to give someone a ride, and although my Blackburn EX-1 rear rack does the job, I'd rather leave it free for cargo. Any product suggestions? Could I make a decent one myself? Is it even possible to control my bike with a 100-150 pound person on the front?

If your bike has the typical high trail front geometry that's popular these days a 100lbs load on the front rack would be very exciting in the handling department.
If passengers are a normal part of your biking missions get an Xtracycle. You can carry an adult plus some cargo and your bike will handle fine.
If you can weld xtracycle provides their specs online so you can DIY to save $$$.

Not sure about the front geometry, but if it helps, my bike's a mid-90s men's Mongoose Hilltopper mountain bike. I can provide pictures if you'd like.
I was thinking about a DIY Xtracycle as a last resort, but then it'd never fit on a car rack, plus the added weight (I have one bike and commute around 80 miles a week on it) and the question of whether or not I could actually make one (I'm a half-decent bike mechanic, but no welding experience). Any other options? I might just get a wider rear rack for holding people and shift my actual cargo to the front.
