    Question Couple of questions about porteur front-racks

    Hello

    I'd like to buy an hybrid, but I need to install a small porteur-style front-rack where I can put my backpack or grocery bag (so it's just to carry a few kgs), and have a couple of questions:

    1. What is the English word for the little hole next to the axle where racks are usually screwed?

    2. Some hybrids don't have this hole, but I notice some porteur racks seem to rest on the fork itself:

    If you can recommend brands, that would enable me to widen my choice of bikes to check.

    CETMA front racks attach to the front axle of the bike. They also have a lot of different size options for the rack platform:

    Trail was said to be short on porteur bikes .. longer offset smaller radius rake..



    Pauls flat bed is not a real solid mount , but that is because its easy to fit on a lot of bikes, and Aluminum.
    good for 10Kg.. , in their specs..

    I'll try to find a light rear- or front-rack that looks like a cradle. Ideal to carry a single bag.

    i guess you'd have to decide you could deal with the shape of the handlebars, but since you don't plan to carry much, there are integrated handlebar baskets

    Have you taken a look at the porteur racks available from the Soma store? http://store.somafab.com/racks.html

    When I load up the front rack on my all-rounder ( built on a Surly CrossCheck) the steering gets noticeably heavier, but it is very stable, more so than without a load. I'd porteur bikes had low trail, it was most likely tto keep the steering lighter. Load carried ahead of the steering axis increases stability when rolling, but requires some attention to balance at low speeds or when stopped. Just make sure the load can't swing, roll, or slosh. A kid fidgeting is probably not so bad... It is when things move due to dynamic forces that cause trouble.

    Thanks for the feedback + infos on the Gamoh racks, which are my plan B. Although the wooden bottom looks nice, me thinks it adds some needless weight. A whole aluminum cradle would be enough for my needs. I contacted a couple of people here who are into building bikes. Hopefully, they'll find my little project worth working on.

    Without any way of experimenting, I don't know if it'd be better to use a porteur front rack or a rear rack.

    Incidently, I wonder how people use such small racks:

    It's meant to support a handlebar bag, like those made by Gilles Berthoud





    A low trail bike based on the French porteur concept, like my Box Dog Bikes Pelican above, is designed to handle very nicely with a load on the front (and it does!). Many other bikes with higher trail get funky with weight on the front, but the low trail design really tames that. And it's not twitchy without weight, either.

    It takes a bit getting used to and I'll have to slow down when there's weight on the front, but it's a great addition.

    In a store where I live. €140/$180, which is about what SOMA etc. charge anyway. It's in steel, so could be a bit lighter in aluminum but it looks like few people know/are equiped to work on aluminum.

    I assume the distance is standard between the wheel axles and the hole where the the v-brakes are connected, so it should be possible to mass-produce and sell them at a lower price, though.

    I think that distance is close to the same on most bikes, but not exactly the same. I could be wrong though.

    I was considering a universal rack that would attach at the canti/v-brake posts and at the fork crown hole, thinking that the distance there was universal. However, it is not. The distance between brake posts varies depending on the width of the fork, and also the height between the brake posts and the crown hole (where fenders and road-style brakes mount) also varies from one fork to the next. All of that makes it tricky to make a universal-fit rack.

    That explains why those racks are a bit on the €xpen$ive side.
