Okay, perhaps you are referring to the Cycling in the margins - food for thought thread.

I can't find the comment, "adjacent to a 12-13 foot lane", in this thread, so I still don't know what you're talking about.

I take one meaning of riding VC to be always taking the lane. At least according to JF & HH all cyclists should be doing. This means cyclists are in the lane of traffic causing passing motorists to either completely or partially go into the oncoming lane to pass on a roadway or slow down & wait until it is safe to do so.

This is how both JF & HH have described it, but I am waiting for their denial of this fact.

Guess what HH & JF I NEVER ride VC. Here's why:

I ride a recumbent, very slow to ride up hills. In my town, on my commute there are some serious hills I have to climb with fully loaded saddle bags.

One of these hills is on South Saint Aubin. after it crosses Glenn Ave. Between Glenn & Morningside Ave there is parking allowed on the one side, the side I ride on, of South St Aubin. For the 1st 3 blocks past Glenn Ave is a pretty steep but short hill. One that causes me to ride in my lowest gear. At best I can only do 4 mph up this hill.

Because of the wider roadway/parking lane on the side I ride on I am able & have to ride close to the curb in the parking lane to allow traffic to safely pass. South St. Aubin is a failry busy roadway through a residential area of town. For so many feet after Glenn Ave there is no parking allowed but after there is.

When I ride in the parking lane motorists can pass with out going into the oncoming lane.

Usually there are no vehicles parked on the steepest parts of the hill when I ride through & not until further up where the hill flattens out & I can pick up speed or it is easier for motorists to see up the hill to pass me in the oncoming lane if I have to merge to the left to pass a parked vehicle.

In other words for my own safety I have to go against the VC way of riding to keep myself form getting clobbered by a motor vehicle & to keep the peace between cyclists & motorists.

This IS NOT VC, it is how ever AC, or Adaptive Cycling, which is adapting my riding to the conditions I am riding in & not asserting myself to taking the lane because of & based on a principle that someone, (JF), wrote a book about.

I ALWAYS ride in an AC style. NEVER VC.

I know, I know, JF & HH will accuse me of going against the VC way of things & making it hard for motorists to accept cyclists rights to the roadway, etc, etc, yadda, yadda, yadda. I really don't give a ****. Especially because AC is how a majority of us ride.

If I am not mistaken there has been some good discussion about AC. Which, if I remember correctly, a majority of us here do when we ride. Maybe someone, other then JF or HH, should write a book on AC.
As with so many of the complaints on this list, your idea of what constitutes VC is inaccurate. I have never described VC as this. This description has come only from those who oppose VC, as one basis for their opposition.

you got to put it together man, that thread and the comment you made in this thread about the road width and gutter cycling. I'm just saying, it hurts me real bad to see that you have a bad case of cycling inferiority complex.

I dunno, maybe someone else is following this, but to me you're like the homeless guy on the corner laughing hysterically for no apparent reason.

His outsider status makes him a better observer of society. Of course the reason for his laughter is never apparent to us, because we're too absorbed with the issue of being "insiders"

Aside from the fact that it is kinda fun just to see them laugh and think about your own craziness from their perspective, a valuable lesson was taught to me in my Academy by a wise old street cop who imparted that same thought about the homeless being outsiders. Many bums have provided the key information needed to solve major crimes just by being part of the landscape.

I didn't even think about that angle... their greatest weakness (being ignored) is their greatest strength (ability to observe people unnoticed)... cool

And then, don't forget, Robin Williams once saved Jeff Bridges life in the Fisher King. true story

BTW one thing I almost forgot to mention is part of my AC style is I do ride in the door zone if I need to, I do not assert my so called right to take the lane. This is within the laws & ordinances in my community. It clearly states cyclists are to ride as far to the right as is practicable. That means, for me, if I have to ride in the DZ while climbing a hill I do so. I have to do so while climbing the hill on South Saint Aubin.

One thing that can not be denied is: VC=staying completely out of the door zone.

I'm willing to bet others here do the same thing if they need to.

JF, HH have you ever done this? Do you do this now if you need to? Do either of you even ride bike anymore? When was the last time you rode?

Try to wrap your little VC warped minds aroung that concept JF & HH.

it's not that big of a deal. just keep your eyes open and be aware of the risks, and ride accordingly.

Why do you persist in making fun of recumbents? Until you ride one, you just can't know how fun they are.

I'm a hot sexy lady and I ride recumbents!

You want a recumbent of your own ask questions about them in the recumbent forum, stay away from mine!

You don't remember your challenge to smokers...and backtracking faster than the Italian army when I offered to take you up on it? Lots of other people do.

But that challenge was from me, directly. I didn't back track, we could not agree on the logistics of the challenge. It still stands by the way if we can come to an agreement on when, where, etc.

With this so called challenge someone else is trying to decide for me, make my decisions for me & volunteer me with out asking me first. I do not take kindly to that. I hate it when someone else makes a decision like this with out consulting me first. I won't stand for it. I may have been more open to it had someone come to me first & said why don't you challenge HH &/or JF. Now there is no chance in heaven or hell of that happening.
