How many hit and runs still happen? Are motorcycles safe? It's not just a bicycle thing.
Many drivers do not know the difference between lanes and conditions safe enough for sharing and those where taking the lane is appropriate. It's up to us to make our own choices and to make them clear by positioning.

I grew up in a country where bicycles were most of the traffic on the streets so it's perfectly natural to me. The main roads where I ride have bike lanes (narrow ones though) and I use them but if I have to get into the main traffic lane for whatever reason, I do. There is a particular stretch of bike lane that is just unrideable thanks to uneven asphalt, debris, and just generally poor upkeep. When riding on the main lane with no bike lane, I try to put myself in the drivers' shoes. I wouldn't want to be stuck behind a cyclist just like I don't want to be stuck behind a slow driver. I try to keep that in mind and move over best I can. However, most times they just go around me. I've noticed it's usually women who insist on driving me off the road because they refuse to change lanes, or just move a few feet over. I'm a woman and that infuriates me. Drivers like that give the rest of the female drivers a bad reputation.
