There are lots of cycling groups on meetup.com. I belong to "Clipped In Cycling" we are not as regular as we have been in past years but is a great group to do faster rides with.

I enjoy going to the 9.30am Saturday road rides starting at Musette Caffe downtown. Great group of people and if you join their mailing list, they do a bunch of lessons and clinics that I think are great for the community.
I've also done the MEC vancouver rides on sunday mornings. Also great, and free.
Training routes that I frequent are Richmond Loops, Iona Beach, Stanley Park, UBC, Horseshoe Bay.

Another good ride for training is the Boundary Bay Park shore-side trail between Centennial Beach in Tsawwassen and Mud Bay in South Surrey. It's about 40 km return and has a head-wind in both directions.
During busier times the Tsawwassen side has amenities, but once you hit the trail there is nothing. Be sure to have water, snacks, and repair stuff with you. I have gotten a few thorn flats over the years.
The surface is mostly light gravel and pretty much flat, but it's a really nice ride.

MEC rides are free. MEC (Broadway street Vancouver) has three group: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The beginner group is really beginners, often people will show up with department store bikes. In my opinion MEC's focus for the beginner ride is safety and participation, not technique. The intermediate and advanced ride are more structured. If you're an experience rider go for the intermediate or advanced group.
