*STOLEN* Yellow/Black 2005 Specialized Hardrock Sport
My Yellow 2005 Specialized Hardrock Sport was stolen from the bike rack in front of Superstore on King George HWY in Surrey this afternoon. The bike was stolen by cutting the Kryptonite cable lock I was using. (My friends bike was locked up next to mine and had cut marks on the cable, but they didn't get through it.)
The bike was equipped with black Crank Brothers Mallet C pedals and Specialized Nimbus 1.5" slick tires. They also made away with the cheap matching yellow Raleigh helmet that I had attached to the cable lock.
Any information leading to the recovery of the bike would be much appreciated. Any information leading my foot to the thieves arses will also be much appreciated.
Unfortunately I never took the time to document the serial number, which was obviously foolish on my part. I bought the bike from a friend who bought the bike from a mutual friend who I've been out of contact with, so I've been unable to determine if he has the serial number on hand or where he originally bought the bike to see if they have a record of the transaction on file.
When I found that the bike was missing I was so annoyed that something like that could happen in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon directly in front of a busy supermarket. Considering they used bolt cutters and tried to make away with at least 2 bikes at once I assume they were sitting in a parked vehicle just waiting for an opportunity, so it's probably a regular occurrence at that location. At the time, I looked around and saw no visible cameras, and the employees at the customer service desk basically ignored me for the 5 minutes I stood there waiting to see if there was someone I could speak to, so I just decided to cut my loses and walk home before the ice cream melted... or before I lost it and made a scene... whichever came first,
If I can manage to get the bike back that would be great, but I'm obviously not holding my breath for a miracle. Either way, next time I'll be investing in a NY FAHGETTABOUDIT lock, maybe 2 depending on how much I can afford to spend on a replacement bike.
How old was the cable? Because I have one that is garenteed to not be able to be picked/cut for like 20 years or something like that, or your bike cash back. But unless you still have the recent from the origanal purchase of the bike, this is useless.
I think I bought the cable in November or December of 2005. It was a Kryptonite Kryptkeeper cable with the newer style keys and it did in fact have one of those replacement programs, but as you mentioned nothing would have been covered without the original purchase receipt so I never registered it.
I knew the lock would never stop a professional thief with the right tools and an unlimited amount of time, which is why I never used the lock for more than quick trips to the store. If I had thought for a moment it could be defeated so quickly and easily I never would have bought the thing. Guess I should have known better than to trust a cable lock, but I trusted Kryptonite's claim of cut resistance which was apparently a big mistake.
I threw the keys away last night, but I believe I may have the locks original documentation around here somewhere, so perhaps it's worth taking a look at since I've got nothing better to do. I went pricing out new bikes and can't afford a damn thing that I actually want, so the only riding I'll be doing is on my friends DiamondBack MTB that's 2 sizes too small for me which managed to escape being ripped off.
