Visiting Vancouver in August - Where to hire/borrow/buy bike?
Hi,
Don't post on bikeforums much, just read C&V and SS&FG usually.
I'll be visiting Vancouver between Aug 16-27, and would love to get ahold of a bike while I'm there to explore the city, so I'm turning to the locals for some help.
Googling around gave me sticker shock at these rates:
Spokes @ Stanley Park wants ~$50/day for an OCR roadie and ~$35/day for a hybrid.
I'd prefer a road/fixie/10 speed bike to a hybrid/mtb, but I guess most rentals will be clunkers.
Are there places that I could hire a non-mtb bike for a week that won't cost me a fortune?
Failing that, what are my chances of buying a cheap, working secondhand bike somewhere close to downtown? I'd be happy to then donate it to some kind of bike co-op or similar when I leave.
Lastly, big ask I know, but do any of you Vancouver bikeforum-ers have a spare bike (56-58cm) I could borrow in exchange for your tipple of choice/cash/esoteric Australian items? I'd bring my own shoes/pedals/helmet/lock.
Hope someone can help me get on two wheels!
Cheers.
PS, if you're ever visiting Melbourne, Australia, drop me a line and I'll hook you up with a ride and some places to go.

If you were visiting Winnipeg, I have an extra I could lend you. But, biking in/around winnipeg isn't exactly what were known for here.

Lots of Rental shops on Denman Street near Stanley Park
If you can't find someone w/ a spare--not to worry! Once you get here, there's at least 4 bike rental shops all on or around the same corner of Denman/Robson street right at the edge of downtown near Stanley Park. They have a lot of different bikes--yeah--lol--some r clunkers, but not all, and I'm sure I've seen a road bike or two--no fixies tho. Fixies are hot in this city right now: really booming, but I've never seen one on offer as a rental. Good luck!
PS: Smart coming in August...monsoon season should be over by then : (

Not the best time to be biking in Stanley park, the western side of the park is still closed, but the eastern side is open, but if you still want to biking there are some pretty good trails in Vancouver...
EDIT: I took a trip down there today and i just realized that the park is open, just, if you want to do the Stanley trail there are detours in place from lions gate to third beach...
