Cycling from Calgary airport
Cycled Calgary - Vancouver many years ago via Lake Louise/Golden/Revelstoke and it was a great trip.
Have the chance to do it again, but this time I want to do a more southerly route, so need some help deciding if I should
head south over the Crowsnest pass to Cranbrook/Van or go Banff/Radium HS/Cranbrook/Van. ?
If heading for the Crowsnest Pass, what would be the best route from Calgary airport?
Is there a bike path that follows highway 2 ? Also see on Goog maps there's a Deerfoot trail ? Suitable for cycling ?
Will be light touring on a road bike and will probably stay at hostels/cheap motels.
Deerfoot Trail is one of the only roads you are not allowed to ride on in the city. Now, unfortunately, there is construction at the airport which took out the bike path that connects the city along with Barlow Trail.
Here is an easy route to the south end of town. From the airport, take Barlow tr north to Country hills Dr. East to 68th st. South to 80th ave. West to Falcon ridge BLVD. South on falconridge blvd. Falconridge turns into 52nd st which will take you all the way to the extreme south at 22x or Marquis of lorne trail. Take 22x west to HWY 2.
The 52nd street route is not the scenic route and it can have a lot of truck traffic, but its relatively easy to ride on.
Have you already embarked on this? I have another suggestion if you're up for it!
If you haven't already set out on this trip, I'd certainly advise against using Hwy 2 on your way South to where it meets Hwy 3 (Crowsnest Pass). Instead, follow the route bigd suggested until you reach 22x (Marquis of Lorne Trail), head West on 22X until you reach the Junction for Hwy 22 South. Hwy 22 jogs a little through Turner Valley and then Black Diamond, but after that it's a fantastic route all the way South to the Crowsnest Pass......MUCH better imho than Hwy 2.
I was going to suggest exactly that route!
