We will have a mild winter

We will have a mild winter this year. I know this because I just purchased studded tires and a ski helmet for riding in tough conditions.

I'm up in R.I. My yard was so deep last winter that one of the dogs just walked over the 4 foot fence on the snow.

We got it bad, but you got it much worse.

I notice we have the same number of bikes.

I am in the "Snow Belt" off Lake Erie. No such thing as a mild winter here.

I've read the lake effect machines won't be operational until later in the winter. I find this hard to believe since warmer water should allow MORE lake effect snow

My wife grew up in Tonawanda, NY, also in the snow belt. I really can't imagine. One day, though, I want to see Minnesota.

Hudson Valley here and we got wrecked last winter. Took 6+ months to repair most roads and some still are pretty bad. I'm honestly kinda scared for this winter. I live less than 3 miles off the river so the wind chill is awful >.< plus it's already snowed here

You should do this ride then, BAM Home

Good people, good food, and great scenery.

I've been enjoying the mild weather and knocking out a bunch of rides. You never know how long this mild weather will last.

Some of the best bike riding I've ever done is north of NYC, on both sides of the Hudson river.

@revcp, thanks for the invitation. Maybe we'll take you up. The Tour De Bronx is happening this Sunday. My wife and I are registered, but the weather forecast for Sunday says rain. We will see. We're planning to do the 25 mile route. That is about the limit of my wife's stamina. I'm working on getting her interested in overnight touring. We've taken one tour so far, with just one overnight. She liked it.

@bikemig, yes, the Hudson Valley is extraordinary. We're very lucky.

I hope you are right. I have heard that we will have a WET winter here in NC and that means cold rain. YUCK probably the hardest to get motivated to ride in.

Here in Droughtopia, I wish for occasional pleasant light rain here, and fifty feet of powder on the mountains :-D

@RidingMatthew, I agree that cold rain, just above the freezing point, is one of the unpleasantest conditions. Add high wind, and it gets worse.

@noglider Yeah on those cold rainy days I might opt for driving. I have not done much driving this year anyway. I know that last year I rode one day in 40F and sprinkling and I stayed dry and warm. It was actually a great ride.

Sometimes I go out in "bad" weather and expect it to be hellish, and it is surprisingly pleasant. Sometimes it is as bad as I expect or worse.

Wind is the great determinator of this in my book. My commute combines highway and city. Except for rogue cars coming out from snowbanked driveways the city commute is usually okay no matter what the winter weather. Highways...a stiff wind can make it unsafe and unpleasant.

I'm in violent agreement. If you follow my posts in "How was your commute today?" you know winds are a concern for me for all four seasons. They can be brutal, even in the warm months, because I commute along the Hudson River, not far from the New York Harbor. Wind can make otherwise decent weather into something really bad.

I suspect you feel a lot more pain than I do. It must be much colder there. Man, when it was 15ºF and blowing like mad, I thought my feet would fall off. How cold does it get there?

I really must visit Nova Scotia some day.

I bike until the temperature drops below-15 C (5 F). I don't know what the wind chill is on a moving bike but I guess it would be around -20 C (-4 F).

I have biked down to -20 C but with my commute taking about an hour in good weather (clear and relatively warm) too cold is not a lot of fun. We used to hit -20 C for a couple of weeks in February, but it's been different the last few years with a greater number of freeze/thaw cycles.
