Today It Was So Cold...
That my bike wouldn't start. 
Had to get a jump start from my son's bike!
Seriously, today it was 2F. I'm thinking I've found the floor. I wore heavy wool socks & hiking boots; my toes were cold. I wore two sets of glove liners and mittens (plus hand warmers); my hands were warm, my thumbs were cold. I wore a face mask with balaclava and cheap goggles; I fogged up a lot sooner than normal (time for better goggles); the little holes to breath through were inadequate, had to pull down the mask to breath, pull down the goggles to see. I guess I'm gonna try making bigger holes in my mask.
On a brighter note I made a discovery today. I have diabetes and carry my testing supplies/meter with me. I try not to let them get too cold, so I put them into an insulated lunch bag (along with my cell phone) and a small Nalgene bottle of almost boiling water. When I pulled the lunch bag out at work (about 45 minutes later) I could feel the heat of the water bottle through the lunch bag. I'll probably zap it again before I go home.

Socks: I would get a Sock liner under those socks, maybe silk?
Goggles: I tried 3 different ones, I commute at night, so the colored lenses suck. I got a small pair of goggles I found CHEAP at a Motorcycle shop, then I use some sort of DEFOGGING agent on them, works great!
Trial and Error on most of this stuff, until you find what works for YOU. I think we have all been through it.

I've already had a 4F commute last week. That was colder than any commute last year. We are having an unusually cold and snowy December. However I did stay resonably warm. I dressed expecting low teens wearing sock liner, wool sock, road shoe and bootie my feet were still cold. Wearing a coolmax base layer and Performance Triflex tights my legs were a little cold but not bad. I should have worn a heavier base layer. My Visorgogs worked pretty well as did my fleece neck gaitor but I need to improve the airflow. It was too cold to breath the air directly but it was too hard to breath through the neck gaitor. I know I have similar problems with a polypro balacava.
