    The Warmest January on Record

According to local news sources this morning, high temps this January were 13 degrees warmer than average here in Arkansas. Low temps were about 7 degrees warmer.

It's sure made my commute nicer. The dogwoods are already budding, well over a month ahead of last year.

I'm not sure of the official score, however, I rode outside 7 times in jan. Given that I do not ride if the temps are under 25 that makes for a pretty unusual jan. Additionally, I have friends who are all ready making maple syrup and I've seen trees budding. Regardless of its causes, global warming just isn't so bad!

Tell me about it. I'm looking forward to our next blizzard! I'm itching to go out to the slopes to ski/snowboard!

But hey! At least I'm riding my bike more

14 minutes of sunshine in December. Now almost the longest string of days with above average temps ever. Fairbanks is starting to look good.... Well, maybe not yet!

I think we just barely missed the record for hottest January here in central Canada. We've got no snow, and today was +5C/40F ... which might have been close to a record for the first day of February.

Second warmest January on record in many places around here.

    Sucks, save it for April.

The thing about global warming is that it is global. The warm conditions you are enjoying on the American continent are balanced by the intense cold suffered by Russuia and E Europe. To find the global temp you have to average over the whole surface.
Over here in the UK we have had one of the driest winters on record with Jan rainfall less than 1/2".

It's really warm in Montreal too. But we still have some snow and the bridges are all closed to bikes until April whatever what the temperature is.

On global warming, don't jump to conclusions. There is a difference between weather and climate. There are other factors that can cause an unusually warm winter.

That having been said, every ice sheet on the planet (except Mt St Helens) is receeding. The northwest passage is opening during the summer north of Canada (good for China (bad for Panama)).

One more data point is that warm winters are typically associated with an El Nina. There is no El Nina this year. So it's a reasonable conjecture to believe that this is associated with global warming. But it ain't proof.

Warmest January on record here in Saskatchewan, very nice I must say! It's been a beotch on my winter beater though with close to a full month of salt covered slushy streets.

Third warmest January ever here in Central Ohio. Logged a lot of miles in January, but didn't get out skiing a single time. Of course, now we're back into the deep freeze with a lot of snow expected this weekend. Just as folks were beginning to think that we'd just fast-forward all the way to spring!

Aye, we haven't seen a January this warm since the 60's. Last January was pretty freaking warm, but this year it was nuts. No trees budding [thanks goodness], but I'm worried that I'll have to mow the lawn...

Just curious - what will constitute "proof"? Here in Red Lodge, MT, elevation 5,555', we have poppys coming up in our yard. Earliest (by far) reporting of flowers blooming in the Bitterroot valley. Needless to say this has been the warmest (and driest) winter on record here as well. Our small town depends on ski tourism for winter. We've received 1/4" of precip for the month of Jan. Granted one odd year is not proof, but we're going on 25 years of warmer and warmer temps.

January was extremely warm along the Colorado. I don't know the stats, buy on a number of days, I was out playing tennis in shorts and T-shirt.

Riding in January is really fun -- I could almost have managed in shorts one day. February is not looking so promising though. There was a really biting wind out there today.

We went for a walk along lake Ontario - in bare feet. I stuck my feet in the water. Cold, but not extreme.
