Lake riding?

Only a couple of weeks left in winter, but I recently picked up a mountain bike and am really looking forward to spring and beyond.

With that said, I'm itching to get a jumpstart on the season and was looking at studded tires. I'm in maine, not much snow up here on the lakes, mostly ice with a few fairly large drifts. How does the bike handle with studded tires? bigger the tire the better?

I'd prefer to stay away from the road, people up here drive crazy. (I'm a land surveyor and often do work near the roads, that's enough near the road for me, I'd rather not have to bike there too )

I recently got some Nokian 294's in 2.1 inch. Just get some! You will be loving it. I was out last sunday on frozen trails with a glass sheet of ice, and I was having so much fun that I was out for 2 hours. I was amazed at the traction on uphill climbs. Going tomorrow for more!

I put some Nokian's on an older steel, rigid frame, mtn bike. I rode on absolute glare ice. You would have thought a Zamboni went over it in some sections. It was great!

The tires held so well it was scary.

I hear you! I've been having so much fun that I'm bummed it's going to be 48 degrees tomorrow and all the ice is going. Hopefully we get a good storm and freeze before it's motorcycle weather...

WOW!!!,

Most fun winter bike video I have ever seen. I'm jealous I don't have a frozen river nearby.

Studded tires rule. No doubt about it.
