All the pics I've posted in this thread were taken on the Fort William First Nation Reserve. The non-snow pics are from the old, defunct Mount Mckay ski hill. The snow pics are from the south east corner of the reserve. There is a trail that runs along superior. Lake on one side and Norwester Mountain cliff face that runs for kilometers on the other. Its a out and back route since the lake and cliffs dont let you go anywhere else. When the lake freezes and snowmobiles get out. I can do it as a loop. Trail one way and lake back the other. Or vise versa. Looking forward to that.

We are still here. Pictures are proof.

Well, it's that time of year again.
I know many of you already have some great winter riding and bikepacking trips in.

BTW, am getting the tent stove together for my golite shangrila pyramid tent. It's going to be awesome. Initial protypes weighed in at about 1.5lbs. Combined with 1.4lb Shangrila. Am aiming for sub 3-lb heated tent system. Makes me happy. Didn't initially set out aiming for that... just one thing leads to another. Much more work to do on the stove though.

I slapped a pair of Origin8 drop-ends and a pair of old road levers on my mountain bike. If I like the way it feels, I'll wrap the bar ends. I just better not forget that the brake levers aren't connected.

Riding through undisturbed snow is one of life's joys right up there with popping bubble wrap. Riding back and still being able to see your tracks is great too. But by the return trip on the second day its definitely time to phone the city and get that path cleared 
The drop-ends on my mountain bike aren't quite as useful as I had hoped. The wide spacing makes the hood position awkward.

My new Christmas present - Pugsley necromancer. Blows away any other water bike I've used over the years. I won't win any races on this thing, but I'm already riding in way more difficult conditions than I was able to in the past.

My Christmas gift to my Felt Cafe 3 were some 45North Polara studded tires.
The super-cold snow is dry and powdery, and I mostly have to worry about it getting compacted to solid ice on the roads. That's where the studdeds come in real handy.

First Commute of 2013
I decided to take the long way home for my first commute of the year (8 miles) and I was surprised to see that the trails were plowed. Although the last week of foot traffic and freeze thaw made for a bumpy and slippery ride of hard pack, ice, and lose snow. I was surprised how well my Trek 520 handled considering I am still running 700c x 32 bontrager hard case slicks! (I am still waiting for my new Suomi Ice Speed tires to come in the mail). I can't wait to try them out.
