I really like the look of this MTB drop bar conversion, I think that's the way I'm going to go for my winter bike when I build it up this year.

So here in Clearwater County, ID it's about 20 degrees and snowing like crazy. I'll be out smiling/riding in it tomorrrow. Here is my winter ride on my favorite rural gravel route.

Thanks! I credit the thread over in C&V; there are some really inspiring builds in there (and of course Sixty Fiver is a continual inspiration).

I'm really diggin' these Conti Top Contact Winter tires. Not studded but the rubber compound and tread do make a difference, they make 3" of snow ride feel more like 1" and don't spin out as readily on slick inclines.

I am resisting the urge to put drop bars on my new fixed gear mtb... the bullmoose bars are cool enough and comfortable enough that I should be able to leave this one alone.

I'm also considering that too but I need to find out about suitable brake and gear levers for that setup.

I have one of these hubs I am planning to build up but just don't know where I will use it yet.
We went from -27 to thawing over the course of a day here as a Chinook blew in from the south... this brings warmer and wetter Pacific air and the little bit of freezing rain has made the roads like curling ice.
Despite that... I have been riding the new fixed gear sans studs (albeit carefully) and swapped the rear cog last night to lower my gearing just a smidge which feel great.

Bar ends and linear pull levers for V brakes will address all of that, if you are rocking cantis you can use normal road levers.

My first attempt at a Winter bike. I'm thinking this one will become a dedicated "ice" bike for next year. It has horizontal rear dropouts and reinstalling the rear wheel and keeping it straight with gloves or frozen fingers is a PITA. I'd only be riding on ice close to home and wouldn't be trying to fix a flat but with dry roads I might be venturing far enough that fixing a flat in cold weather could be a possibility. I have a Bendix 2 speed kickback hub that combined with studded tires might make for an interesting ice bike. Most of the components and accessories on it now would migrate to another frame with vertical dropouts for my beater/Winter bike.
The picture was taken today after a failed attempt at riding on glare ice. I stayed upright but the bike didn't go where I was wanting to go. The streets here are covered with it and they have a pretty steep crown. Once you get off the crown you start sliding toward the edge of the road and all you can do is go with it. Snow is no problem but the ice wins every time and right now there is no money in the bike budget for studded tires.

When I'll likely encounter more icy conditions I ride an old, 90's Rockhopper.
When it's snow I'm trying to get through, I love my 9ZERO7 fattie.
