I'll probably run the pressure low enough that when cornering the tire will stay flat against the ground and the sidewall will simply deform. Last year the course was a corkscrew on ice so the track was one continuous turn which was very tough and slow on a fat bike. The 1/2 fat setup and different frame geometry might give me a bit more speed this year.

This is awesome. I know this post is old, but any comments on the handling? It looks like you increased the head tube angle by a lot... increasing trail.

I was thinking about doing something similar for a winter bike, with a mix of 700c rear 26" front. If you get the tire sizes and fork Axle-to-crown right, geometry should be unaffected:

700c/29er 1.5 inch / 38mm --- 2193.46 diameter
26inch mtb 2.4 inch --- 2137.48 diameter

I only rode it a few times, but it was pretty fun. Going down roads with soft deep ruts the front end was nice and stable. The back end would kick out a bit but didn't cause much trouble. Less effort to pedal than my Moonlander which is welcome for longer winter rides. I'd like to try a fat fork up front on a regular mountain bike some time. I've been tempted to keep an eye on the local used sites for a good deal on rigid mtb with a threadless headset.

I tried that setup briefly earlier in the year on bare pavement with a different wheel and smaller tire. The tire I was using had a bit of self steer which made the handling weird. I would definitely pick a tire that is known to not have self steering characteristics on hard surfaces. I think most of those tires wouldn't be anyone's first choice for a winter tire anyway.

Effective outer diameter for the 26x4.8 and 700x35 were pretty close with the front end being a bit taller. A 29er or 700c hybrid would probably be the best options for trying to keep the front and rear close. That assumes the original & fat fork are the same length, a frame designed for front suspension probably has a longer fork. Outer diameter also changes with rim width, I think there are some fat tire / rim charts where people have measured how tall / wide tires are on various rims.

Replaced my old mountain bike with a fat front capable Troll. I just need to pick up a rear disc wheel to use up front for summer riding.

My old Raleigh "Portage" has returned to the fold and will become my winter bike. It was traded back to me for a smaller Nishiki Apache.

Here's my new winter bike. Had tires and rims from the old bike, also fenders, rear rack and folding carriers. Tires are studded Innovos. Got the bike at a lawn sale for $35, everything looks good, and the frame fits better. Just have to put on some lights and wait for the snow.

I actually bought this several years ago to make into my winter bike but it was just to nice. But finally decided to get it ready and use it when I can over the mountain bike. This is my Kona Jake The Snake. It's still got the CX tires on it but I will be sourcing a decent set of slightly smaller road tires for it soon. Fairly tight fit for the fenders right now and I'm worried about ice build up. I also need to rig up an extension for the back of the front fender to keep as much spray off the drivetrain as I can.

I really like winter touring and camping. In all the years I've done it I've NEVER had a black fly or mosquito bite me.

Cheers

I take a change of clothes a compact alcohol-gel fuel stove and fuel and some food just in case. These images are taken near a parking lot but only a few kilometers from here there are no footprints except those made by animals.
