I am looking for a new winter jacket for road riding and long-distance (12 miles) commuting. I bought a Pearl Izumi Barrier jacket last winter but found that the wind proof front was too wind proof and did not breath at all so I would get wet and eventually cold and clammy.

I just stopped at a shop and tried the PI Gavia (Amfib material for the most part) jacket. Seems to breath a lot better. I'm about to pull the trigger on that one but I thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone had any other suggestions that might work better. A couple things I'd like to see on the Gavia would be a two way zipper, pit zips and maybe some more reflective material. Its dark in the winter.

The Insulatour jacket also seems interesting.

I'd like something that would work at warmer temps (around freezing) but also be able to layer up under it for temps as low as -20 F... or even colder. The Gavia in large fits me just a wee bit loosely and seems like it would stretch enough to fit some warmies underneath.

So far this year I've been wearing a Giordana "Tenax Pro" jacket (from Sierra Trading post) and it's been working out well. It's too hot above 10-15C (50-60F) and has been cozy down to just below freezing (as cold as we've had) with just a t-shirt underneath. It's also water resistant.

Yeah I got that same Tenax Pro as well. My cold tolerance is not as great.
During last night's 45 degree ride, I had on a wicking layer and a long sleeve jersey underneath the jacket and it was just enough to keep my core warm. Its a nice tight fitting jacket. In the 50s it too hot with anything more than a short sleeve underneath.

Take a look at ice climbing jackets. The hood on mine fits over helmet when I get really cold.

The PI Gavia looks pretty nice and I've heard good things about it. Tried on several warmish jackets this past weekend and I thought the Sugoi RS jacket was something I would buy (maybe when if it goes on sale this spring...).

Softshell jacket. My next one will be a custom from BeyondFleece. Cycling shells seem to be too much money for too little performance.
