Fixed Gear Snow Riders

Hey, I love riding my fixed gear in the snow, sliding it around on ice and the like. MY commute is much more enjoyable once the winter comes 'round. Any one else ride fixed gear on their winter rides?

I've seen about half a dozen fixies this winter. One was a very cool Surly done with custom components. It actually gave me a few ideas for my own bike. Most are just beaters that have been converted to fixed gear. Not sure I'd trust them to hold together or stay upright, but the riders seem to be very young so maybe gravity isn't a big deal for them yet. Can't say I like the idea of "sliding around" on ice! But of course a fixed gear with Nokians would solve that problem.

The winter beater fixed wheel conversion is pretty much the ultimate winter bike, except for maybe a Pugsley or 29er.

I used to ride a geared mtb in the winter, but haven't ridden it in three years since my first fixed wheel ride.

A quality rear wheel and chain on an old lugged frame is all you really need.

Yes. I put on Hakkapeliitta studded tires and drop my gearing by a tooth in the rear (Albany is hilly, and those tires ride like wet concrete).

I'm seriously considering putting together a 'cross bike though so I can use a different route to work.

I was seriously considering going single-speed this winter to save some maintenance hassles but after pushing those heavy studded tires through 7 miles of snow, ice, hills and a few bare flat areas, I decided I like my gears.
