    Urban Winter Cycling

    I'm debating whether to get a beater $50 bike and put studded tires on that, and just use my primary bike for clear riding... OR... get a second set of wheels and just quick-release swap tires on a day-to-day basis. A beater seems a slightly better option given potential salt damage, but somehow I think it'd be safer with my bike's disc brakes and better gearing. Recommendations?

    Well from the NE forum it seems like studded tires would be a waste so I might slap on some knobby tires... and just hose it off, better and easier that way. I'd rather have the disc brakes in sloppy conditions. Thanks.

    That was my call as well.

    Four years later, I have yet to see much corrosion of anything.

    I live in Anchorage AK and I don't see any salt damage. I just leave the bike alone and do monthly cleanups with fresh oil, not water.

    Salt is dumped here pretty abusively on the east coast... so I think I plan on hosing down the beast every couple rides.

    Off topic... Cosmoline, have you had any smoked beer from Alaskan Brewing Co. in Juneau? Was just reading up on it, sounds great... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoked_beer
