Crap! That means only 9 more weeks of riding in the snow!

Well, ok, probably more like 15 weeks for me . . .

Yes? And then what ... another 9 weeks or so before the snow all melts.

The first day of spring is usually celebrated with a blizzard or a cold front moving in.

I don't know how you do it up there. Actually here if you get through February we are pretty much out of the woods. We get a surprise snowstorm in March occasionally but they usually don't last long.

March is a weird month up here ... you can have a couple really nice days and think, "Ah, spring is on it's way! ", and then the next day it's -17, and it's cold and snowy for the next 10 days. April is a bit better, but a good sized snowstorm or two are entirely possible. Last year, I left for Vancouver Island on April 5th, and there was a huge snow storm just before we left. Then there was another one during the week we were on Vancouver Island, and another one on the weekend of April 20/21, when I was going to hold my first 200K of the season. After that it was pretty good, although we did ride through a flurry in the mountains on the May long weekend.

I remember having to break out the studs in early November and thinking, "Only a month left before the first day of winter."
I also remember finally taking the studs off in late April '07 and thinking, "Only a few weeks left before the first day of Summer."

Here in NY winter is tricky... it likes to play nice and coy for November and December... cute flurries here, blustery day there... January is when it begins to slowly creep up on you... and March and April are usually when it brings the beat down. First day of Spring is closer to May 1.

In spite of all the griping about long winters in these parts, "useful" winter ends pretty much by March. Outdoor skating rinks are no longer maintained starting about mid February. Snow storms are possible, -even likely, but any accumulated snow doesn't last long.

March and to a certain extent April are neither fully winter nor fully spring, - it's a period of climatological purgatory. Could be warm or frigid, snowy or rainy, none of which lasts for long except maybe rain. It's my least favorite time of year weather wise.

I can remember having a few days of 80 degree weather in April followed by a foot of snow less than a week later.

Only 1 month since the Winter solstice and already there is a noticeable increase in daylight. At 5:00 PM is is now getting dark, but there is still some daylight till 5:30. A month ago it was pitch black at 5:00 PM. I like daylight .

Happy riding,
André
