I'm guessing someone usually does the clothing shopping and laundry for you.
Acrylic sweaters, and other clothing, have been around for YEARS! I'll bet you've got some in your closet right now - either 100% acrylic or a blend.
Personally, I'm not fond of acrylic ... it's comfortable and all that, but any time I've worn it there has been a small lightening storm. I create or transmit A LOT of static on my own no matter what I wear. Things are constantly crackling and zapping around me. But if I put on something acrylic, the situation gets about 10 times worse. All the zapping etc. becomes really uncomfortable. So, I try to avoid anything with more than about 50% acrylic ... and if possible, I try to avoid it all together.
I don't like acrylic either. You can almost always get a more comfortable, warmer fabric for the same price. Natural fibers usually provide the best comfort and warmth in my experience. A lot of the clothes I use for cycling are made of wool or a wool/synthetic blend.
