I put them on a pair of old hybrids my wife an I use around town. I like them - the width encourages a looser grip that is more comfortable on long rides. They didn't properly fit these bikes so I cut them down a bit -- still comfortable.

Numb hands? I used to have the same problem until I rode with a friend with some bike setup experience. He had me move my seat backwards on the rails which took weight off my wrists. Now I no longer have numb hands. Have you tried ergonomic/setup changes on the bike?

I don't really understand geometry and setup. I would expect moving the seat back to stretch you out so you would lean forward putting more weight on your hands than in a more upright position.

They help. A lot, in fact.
Alas, they don't solve the underlying problem, which is that you're putting a lot of weight on your wrists in the same, ergonomically improper (twisted flat, as I assume you are using something similar to flat bars) position for an extended period of time.
