Ok eveyone... Here is what it looks like outside my office window this afternoon here in Montana... Winds are NW at around 40MPH gusting over 60MPH~!~ Anyone for a ride? :D

This photo was taken at 1:45 P.M. on October 29, 2003.

Looks

Cozy!
Few years when I was a hardcore type of rider I would've. Now, I doubt it, mostly because is about 12 mile commute.
Corsaire ;)

It's a long time since I have commuted in snow, but I used to find riding in newly fallen snow most satisfying, as motor traffic is totally messed up and the snow has not yet been packed into ruts that make the steering difficult.

Thanks for reminding me what's coming. Still like Summer here in KS but just a matter of time. Oh, yeah...to answer the question, yeah I might try it..............once.

Nice shot of the snow! It is supposedly snowing here, haven't seen it yet. Looking forward to riding to work tomorrow.

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but inside it's so delightful, and as long as you're willing to stay, what the hey, what the hey, what the hey...

Actually getting some flakes here, nothing is sticking yet, but more is forecast for the weekend. I love this time of year! What am I going to do if I move to AZ?

Michel Gagnon 10-30-03 12:03 AM

I have done so before. Not this year yet.

I think my "worst" day was a 20 km ride to a jobsite in the morning, with a snowstorm that had left 20 cm of fresh and wet snow over a thin coat of ice, and with a cross to 1/4 head wind of maybe 30-50 km/h.

In the afternoon, winds had shifted, temperature was warmer, so I had steady rain, with a 60-90 km/h headwind. It was much warmer, though... about +1 C.

Regards,

Zin 10-30-03 09:20 PM

I just wanted to say thanks for the replies!

Today was even worse than yesterday. Less wind (20-30mph) more snow.
The ground is still warm enough to melt the snow into ice. We now have about an inch of ice on the roadways. Fun! Dispite this I saw several fellows on bikes today. I guess I am just a wimp... :(

Hi Zub! Yes its 11F/-12C right now! Looks like more snow and cold through next week. I wonder if you know of a seasonal job I could get there in NZ? :D

Zin 10-30-03 10:23 PM

naisme, nice ride! I sure miss the cities!

TeleJohn 11-02-03 01:06 PM

N7CZinMT,

I am actually jealous! My favorite sports are Nordic and Telemark skiing. You live in a great state for that, lots of backcountry.

Funny you mention Nordic skiing. I was just looking at a set of Nordic skis yesterday! We don't normally have that many days of snow cover here on the high plains so I have not taken the plunge yet.

Hi there N7CZ;

I was over in your neck of the woods last year and your juvenile population tried to kill me. I still don't know what I did to upset the birds.

I took off from our motel in the late afternoon and rode up the hill and out to the base. I was on my way back and about half way down the hill when these snotty nosed little poops grabed the back of my bike and took off. A white Honda without plates, thats it. I went for the flying "W" with a 92 point landing in a mini market.

The local law shows up and when he found out I was Ok, except half my hide being imbeaded in the asphalt, he just chuckled. He asked if I had seen any other bikes out in that area. No and what that got to do with it I snap back.

He proceeds to explain to me that they were having trouble with a group of escaped teenage hemroids that were bored and doing this to bikes on weekend nights.
He even got a bigger chuckle when he found out I was a visiting Deputy.

I get back to the room and my wife about freaks. I had to soak in the tub to get most of the pavement out. The rest exited over the next couple of weeks.

The next day none of the locals at the convention were surprised at what happened. They just said this happens all the time. Now you tell me.

Well, the next day the main speaker, an MD from Billings, and I go ride the Lewis and Clark trail. Nice enjoyable ride. I get back towards the end (by the railroad car) and I thought a 747 dumped it toilet on me. I don't know what you feed those Gulls over there but it makes them squirt like a Christmas Goose. He hit me right on my helmet visor. I don't have to tell you what it did but there was enough dropped to destroy any compact car it hit.

All in all we had a good time and they did a nice job on the trail. We are still laughing about the trip.

Gary D.

Hi Gary,
I am sorry to hear about your trouble on your trip here! I gotta say, I have never had that kind of trouble. As for the Gulls, they are kept fat and happy by the local shopping mall parking lot.. :p I am happy that you recovered! I wonder if your contact was with the local Police Dept. or the County Sheriff's Dept. There is a HUGE differance in style between the two Departments.

Shoot me an email the next time your over this way. I'll get you hooked up with cool road or MTB ride.

Well, it is finally here, three inches is suppose to fall today, then turn to rain tonight, and slush tomorrow. I can't wait for my commute to work.

Well, its still cold here. High temp of 19F today. Been cold and snowing for a week now. Over 6" of powder on the ground. Winds are expected to kick up this afternoon. We are to be below freezing the entire week.

I did pick up a "new" bike for my commuter. Its an old Specialized Hardrock GS Sport. I'll be adding finders, a rear rack and possibly panniers (sp?).

Schiek 11-03-03 12:42 PM

I lived in Rochester NY, last year, and the Twin Cities before that. I now live in Washington DC where today it will reach 80 degrees. You all are making me jealous.

Ok here is the same angle today! This is the first blue sky we have seen since my original post! Temp is 8 F now. 2:35PM. Just thought ya'll would like to see the "normal" view accross the city. 8 inches of powder.

Its now 10:14PM and the temp is -6F. That is a new record low temp. The old record was -2F! Forcast low temp is -14F!

Bikealot 11-04-03 03:51 PM

I kind of feel bad for you all. We've got 75 degrees and partly cloudy here in Atlanta. And I've been complaining about the 45 degree temps in the morning when I try to get in a few miles thinking it's to cold. Thanks for the reality check. :D

Zub Zub 11-05-03 01:31 AM

Hmm. I am a network engineer. I wonder if there is any companies that need someone like me for the southern hemisphere summer? :D If I timed things right, I would never have to live through winter again.. :p
