Can I fit (studded) 35 or 40c tires onto a 38c rim safely?

So my rims are 38c on both my bikes. I see that schwalbe offers Marathon Winters only in 35 or 40 sizes. Which should I go for? Or another brand? I use marathon plus tires the rest of the year and really like the flat protection peace of mind.

What rims do you have? What's the actual rim width? My winter wheels are 27mm wide, and that works great with my 37C studded tires.

but would a 40mm studded have enough frame clearance?

the narrower tyres also slice through snow a bit better.
Food for thought: if you aren't dead by 2050, you and your entire family will be within a few years from starvation. Now that is a cruel gift to leave for your offspring. ;)
