I live just outside of DC, so we don't get too much snow, but when we do it is typically nasty icy/slushy and is pretty much impossible to ride my fixed gear with 700x25 tires in. I have a crap BMX lying around that I would be willing to sacrifice to the weather: would it be wise to try to ride this in the snow/ice/rain if I took precautions such as studded tires? Can anyone recommend some 20" studded tires that may work? Recommendations on any other upgrades that would snow proof my BMX? Has anyone ever tried this before? Am I being an idiot?

I know this is stupid but I would just like some validation for my sanity.

there are only two 20" studded tyres that I know of, one is the innova snow fox and the other is schwalbe marathon winter in 20"

I think a small frame bike should work well in winter conditions as long as you can adapt to the low seat hight. With the ability to stand flat footed easily on a BMX bike you may not even need studded tires.

not having a derailleur that'll get clogged up because it's sitting really low is a bonus too.

Hi,
I'm an old school 1980's BMXer... was pro. Where I grew up in British Columbia we had lots of snow and ice. It was uncommon to ride bikes in the winter in the 1980's so.. I have been on studded tires on my BMXs since 1985. What I would do is stud an agressive tire with stainless steel 'Round Head' 1/2 " screws in any pattern desired. To keep them from poping the tube, I use an old street tire... cut the wire beads off and use it as a liner. I am 46 years of age now.. have a Dyno Nitro.. Use a rear studded tire all year round. The only disadvantage is if your on new studs (depending on how they are arranged) be aware the ashphalt can get dicey... especially if there is gravel. Once your on studded tires you'll never go back!
I used to do full 360 donuts on sheets of black ice! If there are companies making studded tires for 20" BMX Wheels... they are bogus and overrated!
