wow, lucky you're in Alabama I guess eh? I don't mess with chemical warmers until below zero.

You got decent socks with some room in your shoes?

+1 for friends/coworkers who insist on offering a ride
+1 for road salt/sand, especially the slippery piles of it that remain long after the snow/ice is gone
+1 for snot, boogers, mucous, etc.

and i'd like to add...
i hate the WIND that on some days feels like it will shred my face off.

Not using the word "hate", but my unpleasant encounters while winter cycling:
1). The wind in the face
2). New potholes created due to freeze-thaw cycles
3). Snow-covered bike lanes
4). My mom asking me to use public transit on the cold days, and people acting all surprised when they see me on my bike in the cold.

I had a blast reading everyone else's posts.

I don't like spending an extra 45 minutes a day (granted, at the extreme) putting on everything to ride when it's cold.

Not being able to "sports blow" through a balaclava AND bird beak mask when it is REALLY cold. Swallowing that crud is not something I want to do either.

Trying to ride through snow with mountain bike tires after a snow fall. (meaning, it does not work)

Everything else, I'm pretty much ok with. I like winter.

My commute this morning was -25C. About 10mins into my 30min commute my shifters no longer worked. I was stuck in that one gear the whole way.

I dread the end of winter and the onset of mud, it means I'll actually have to clean my bike!
All the "I hate the crud" votes help me to appreciate trail riding in Fairbanks where water stays frozen, even with road salt all winter!

I think one of the things I hate the most about winter is how long it lasts ... it just keeps going, and going, and going, and going. I could handle it if it snowed and got cold on December 1st, and then melted and was finished on March 15th or something like that ... but no, we'll likely still be having snowstorms here till sometime in early May. We'll have several warmer days just to make us think that we're finally going to have something that resembles spring ... then it will snow again.

Salt, sand, mud, muck...that stuff doesn't bother me. I got me a single speed with fenders. I wipe it down after each ride and just replace the chain, cog, and chainring every year.

I hate:

1. Getting in the shower after a long ride. Ouchie! My extremities!
2. Having no one to ride with. HTFU, sissies!
3. Icy roads. Ouchie! My extremities!
4. Freehub lube that freezes and prevents the pawls from enagaging when you try to pedal
5. Dark all the time
6. Cleaning up gritty, sandy puddles under my bike after it thaws

I love:

1. Having the leisure to work on my racing bike without putting it back together
2. Waves from snowplow/salt truck drivers who recognize me
3. Not riding the trainer
4. Kicking everyone's booty in March
5. "But you didn't ride TODAY did you?"
6. My awesome winter bike

If you make sure the back end of the fender is closer to the tire than the front end, this shouldn't be as much of a problem. Works for me, anyway.

-The extra time it can take to get geared up.
-The knowledge that when it's winter, it'll be summer again in half a year.
