When it comes to riding in the cold, I have most of the gear, and know how to keep everything warm except the...well crotch region. When it is cold out, I will wear a wintex/roubaix bib with my cycling shorts under them. After a long ride, overall I feel ok, except for man region. What are some ways to deal with this?

There really is only two options that I am aware of. Both can work. Which method suits you best you will have to discover.

1st method. Windproof jock strap or cycling undergarments. These are made especially for cold weather riding and have a windproof panel in the front crotch area. You wear them under your cycling shorts. I think you could make a pair cheap by taking a regular synthetic material jockstrap and sewing a piece of rip stop nylon inside the pouch

2nd method: This is the better method for me. It entails wearing another layer over the upper legs and thighs. In other words a second pair of exercise shorts, or another pair of tights. If your legs are generally warm enough you might try just an inexpensive pair of Lycra shorts over or under your good cycling shorts to add extra insulation over this area without adding anything else to bind the knee up. This will add more warmth in the pelvic region without getting your legs over heated since the lower leg with less insulation will help keep you cool.

A funny idea hit me. Why not make your own polar fleece jock strap out of wide elastic band, stretchy polar fleece and nylon.

Wow. Windtex bibs solved the problem for me. Even with my breeziest old shorts underneath, the boys are staying nice and warm. Maybe the codpiece is the way to go for you.

I wear a pair of biking shorts, then start stacking layers depending on how cold it is.

Shorts down to 60

Tights down to about 40-45

1st pair of long undies down to 25-30

2nd pair of long undies down to about 0

3rd pair of long undies down to -15 (feeling like the michelin man or pilsbury dough boy)

-15 is the coldest I've ridden

I gotta say I ride in temps to below zero F and regularly ride in teens and 20's and have never had a problem or had to give any consideration whatsoever to the problem you mention.

Am I alone?

Last spring I pulled out of a wet/windy/utterly miserable road race because the junk was sufficiently frozen I was starting to have some genuine medical concerns (which were unfounded, but the pain was remarkable).

In any case, I'd really starting to consider a thick swatch of fleece. Even windproof bibs are thin and that area gets significant evaporative cooling.

Yup. My rule after that one was if it's too wintry/shiddy to take the M/C I'll just skip it. I'm no princess, but damn, that was bloody awful.

On a serious note, cycling tights under dual layer wool long johns under windproof hiking pants.

My assumption is your main problem is wind instead of insulation - that region of the body (along with armpits) creates a lot of heat. Bibs are excellent because they heavily insulate that region, but without proper wind blockage all of that heat will be dragged away.

Not real familiar with the bibs you've got, but Craft makes excellent winter tights that block the wind. They're the Craft Storm Bib, wear these over (or for depending on your preference, under) your bike shorts. For real cold days, have another pair of pants on top of both of these (I use jeans, but its for commuting so doesn't look too wierd) and its definitely sufficient for Michigan winters.

These are good products, but our research and feedback has found that many guys prefer the warmth and comfort of the polar jock because it reduces the number of layers one needs (think Michelin man) and keeps the body heat of the, uh, equipment, closer to the body where less heat is exchanged. Also prevents too rapid evaporation cooling.

A jock and something else is still two layers, unless I've misunderstood how they're supposed to be worn.

I've gotten pretty cold in that region myself but wearing Craft windblocking XC pants over padded tights has worked to temps below 0 F. PI Amfib bib tights over padded tights are even warmer. I've ridden in weather in the teens below 0 with that combination.
