running tights

sorry if this has been asked before...i ran a quick search and didn't see anything. anyway...i live in texas, and it doesn't get that cold here, but every once in a while, it gets a tad cold for just shorts. so, today as i was at target (let's not discuss this store, please, atleast not in this thread), i saw some running tights that supposedly wick the moisture away, blah blah. they were only 12 bucks. now, i've been reading, and i know how people feel about cheap clothes, and how they don't last that long, etc. i agree, but like i said, i won't be wearing them that much, and if they only last for this winter, that's fine, because they were only 12 dollars. ok, so, to get to my question: they obviously don't have any padding in them like normal bike shorts. is it cool to wear my spandex over/under these tights? anyone have any expereince with this? i would like the padding if i can get it for the longer rides, but i can't justify spending 40 dollars on some real bike tights that i will only wear a few times a year. are there any other alternatives? thanks.

Wear the tights OVER your LYCRA padded riding shorts.

I wear running tights over my bike shorts all the time. It just seems more flexible than a pair of tights with a sewn-in pad. Besides, I also use the tights for running and under my ski pants.

$12 seems like a sweet deal. I might swing by Target myself.

I've worn tights over and under my bike shorts. I don't see any difference one way or the other. Anyhow, they work well until the temperature starts dropping below the 50s.

Sometimes over, sometimes under. You can also get padded undergarments which basically turn anything into biking shorts/pants.

Depending on the seam, it makes a huge difference whether it's over or under. That was an uncomfortable lesson to learn. Plus, if it warms up, it's a lot harder to take them off.

I often wear compression shorts underneath my cycling shorts (sshhh, don't tell the UnderRoo Nazi's). I've found that turning them inside out solves the seam rub problem.
