    Sandals

I've read on Icebike that SPD sandals are a workable option - easy to add more layers without compressing toes. I know that a few folks on this forum use sandals in the winter. So what do you think?

I'm relatively new to winter cycling, and wondered to what temperature sandals with lots of socks kept your feet warm. What I have now will work down to the upper twenties F, and I'm trying to choose between boots and staying with the SPD option.

I use sandals and a thick sock, plus neoprene booties. It works fine for me, and I've been riding in the coldest weather in Chicago. I haven't felt even slightly cold wearing the sandals. In fact, I think I'm a little hot, but there's nothing wrong with being a little hot. It beats being a little cold!

I have the booties and socks - and just ordered Exustar SPD sandals on sale from Nashbar: Exustar

I figure it's worth $25 to give it a try.

I though the way to use sandals in winter was woolen socks then gortex waterproof socks. Do you use the neoprene booties over or under your sandals?

I actually use the hydrosocks (from performance) on the really cold days, and then the booties over everything. On the warmer days, I use the thick socks, then put on the sandals, then the booties over all that.
