Bar Mitts for Swept Bars
 

I ride with Originate Bars that are similar to On One Mary Bars. Do the MTB or Road bike Bar Mitts fit these? Anyone with experience?

I use the standard MTB Moose Mitts with my Mary bars, they worked well to have the Velcro right at the bend. I used a cut up rag wrapped around the cables to fill in the gap a little better as well.

My winter bike has handlebars close to the On-One Mary handlebar and the fit is fine, however, I was very disappointed with Bar Mitts over-all performance. Hopefully you live somewhere warmer than Wisconsin, otherwise your hands will still get painfully cold with Bar Mitts, even while wearing good winter gloves.

I ended up buying a heavy winter jacket at a thrift store, cut it up and sewed it together to fit over the Bar Mitts for better insulation. Then I bought a fake-fur fabric, cut it up and glued it to the small and large ends of the Bar Mitts to baffle the wind. Only then did the Bar Mitts preform anywhere close to my expectations, and it is the deconstructed jacket that is doing all of the work; the Bar Mitts really only provide internal structure in this configuration. If I had to do it all over again I would skip the Bar Mitts and try to find a better product.

Bar mitts shouldn't touch your hands/gloves and the bar mitts should be totally windproof. Maybe that was the problem.

hmm. i didn't count on Bar Mitts for a lot of insulation, but they've been great water/wind proof shields. i can run them without gloves on down to around 30-35F and with a mid weight winter glove i've gone down to 19F.

+1 on not being too close to the hand. i got the large size and i'm glad i did. plenty of room for a heavy glove if i need it. if i can find a good deal on some lobster mittens, i'll try those too, but the Bar Mitts have been great so far.

No, Bar Mitts just suck. And I never said my hands or gloves touched the Bar Mitts, so I don't know where you're coming from with that comment.

Additionally, the neoprene may be windproof, but they have such a big open space in the rear of the Bar Mitt where you insert your hands that it lets in all of the cold and wind, effectively rendering them worthless. What good is blocking the cold air from the front if the Bar Mitts allow that same cold air to come in from the rear?

That was a rhetorical question because I don't want any of us ton hijack Wiggles post, But Wiggles, if you haven't purchased Bar Mitts yet, my advice to you is to find a better pogie.

Well because any contact between the hands/gloves and the bar mitts could create a painful thermal bridge in cold weather.
Anyway some bar mitts suck some don't, mine in particular. Especially when there is no contact with my gloves.

My Dogwood Designs are very warm and fit my bars pretty well. You might check them out on line. They are made in Alaska and there are different models available.

My experience with Bar Mitts has been the opposite. I don't think any brands are made to seal up completely. After all, you still have to get your hands in and out to signal/ring your bell, etc. The major benefit is keeping the wind off your hands. Mine are an enormous benefit to me and are very well made; they probably add at least 20 degrees (F) effectiveness to whatever glove or mitt I am wearing.

I just put some Bar Mitts on my Origin-8 Space Bars. Haven't used them in the cold yet, but they do fit. I had to move my shifter a bit (single, old friction shifter) so the lever was able to move its full range. Seems like they will work great. Hands were sweating in them on my test-ride.

Thanks for the info. I actually have Origin-8 Space Bars too and am thinking of the standard Bar Mitts for my commuter bike. Some of the poggies posted on this thread are over kill for what I was thinking of - just looking into the neoprene ones.
