Want to get arrested? Ride a bike in this town...

I posted this in another thread, but I thought I'd start a new one in order to give it a little more visibility.

I live just outside Watertown, NY. This is an excerpt from an interview with the town mayor.

Listen in at about 1:30 to 2:30.

You shouldn't have to sign in to anything. Just click on the link and click on the "play" arrow.

Anyways, the mayor states that anyone riding a bicycle in winter conditions should be arrested. That it's as bad as texting while driving or something.

Nope, I get a sign in page, not a play page - maybe it already recognizes you. Thanks for the detail, appreciate it.

Maybe they will also arrest anyone on foot...................... lol

I had to search for it using key-words on the site. Doesn't seem to want to allow direct link.

Just put the keywords "mayor graham bicyclists winter" in the search box and its like the first one that comes up.

Just another politician spouting sound bites without actually having a clue. Yeah, there are people who shouldn't be riding a bike in the winter, but they are usually the same individuals who are a hazard on a bike all year 'round. Winter cyclists are no more a hazard than the countless drivers who can't seem to grasp the basic concepts behind driving on snow and ice. There are multitudes of competent winter riders who are no more "in the way" than any other road user. I'm willing to bet that if one was to do a proper study, the number of injury/property damage cases per 1,000 winter cyclists, is far lower than the number of injury/property damage cases per 1,000 winter drivers. People like the mayor, who I doubt cycle at all, can't imagine riding a bicycle in winter any more than someone from Central America can fathom driving on an icy road.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the radio host making the statement that "cyclist should be arrested" and not the Mayor (or am I confusing the two)?

Yea the radio host was the person making comment about "cyclists should be arrested riding during the winter." However the mayor didn't disagree with him either so in his mind, he's probably was thinking the same thing but didn't pull the trigger to say it fearing he'll get backlash from the public.

Ah, no. The mayor is the person who stated that someone riding a bicycle in winter conditions should be arrested. He also furthur states that "but they have their, quote, rights...."
