Blown off the bike today

I was leaning hard to the right, into the wind on ice. Every time the wind died down suddenly I'd have to correct as my bike over steered right. Well I was not expecting the opposite - a huge gust blew my bike out from under me. This is my fourth winter and I've never experienced this. The balance gods were smiling because as the tires broke loose on the ice and shot left I yanked my right foot out of the pedal and when it touched down my left foot released. I literally walked it off.

The lower saddle took a month to get used to but it paid off today.

Stay safe out there. It's gonna be super duper chilly tomorrow.

This is the windiest Winter I can remember, glad you were able to make a graceful recovery.

You did better than I did. Two weeks ago got into some black ice. Only going about 4 miles/hour but left foot didn't release cleanly. Injured left MCL - 3-6 weeks recovery. Fortunately no cars nearby as I went down. Glad you nailed the dismount!

You rode outside today! I didn't even like walking to my car this morning! -18 and windy as all hell.

We had a cold front move through NC last weekend with an incredible squall line. The NWS measured an 86 mph gust at the airport, and there were limbs and trees down across the area with significant power outages. Fortunately I was not riding my bike at the time as it most certainly blown me over. A woman in my neighborhood was walking on a greenbelt nearby and was killed by a large limb that blew off a tree.

40 mph winds are expected to persist for the next 24 hours in the Windy City.

I'm on the Western edge of the state, we're getting them here too. I was watching a sparrow flying from snow bank to snow bank trying to go against the wind. It was blowing him backwards across the crust on top of the snow in the open spots. He finally gave up and went with the wind to a stand of evergreens.

On a descent today I was riding into the teeth of a 100kmh wind and driving rain. If I stopped pedaling for a few seconds, I literally would come to a stop and could essentially track-stand using gravity and the wind.

However, in my case, thankfully the temperature was 10C and not the crazy extremes many of you folks in the US are facing now.

Regardless, these are the stories that make us true cyclists. Safety to all of you.
