yeah, it's so cold and icy out that it was actually more fun and a better workout to ride my spin bike in the basement. Normally I would prefer riding outside with two flats and being chased by hornets rather than a workout on the spin bike.

Up here in Illinois we're close to breaking records for snow and low temps. We've received close to 50" of snow with more on the way. Biggest riding challenge out here in the country is the shrinking road. Many have been reduced to single lanes, with the medians packed with icy snow. The middle of the road, where tires don't tread, is also caked, so drivers are reluctant to move over. Hence, I also have been relegated to my (shudder) basement trainer.
On the plus side, the snowshoeing has been terrific. And I can't count how many hours I've spent dead-lifting all that snow off of my driveway and sidewalks. The pile at the foot of my property is now taller than the mailbox. I've never before considered riding the Horribly Hilly Hundreds, but with all of the snow-shovel squats, this could be the year.

It has been cold, but I still want to ride. It's a form of a rail against the tyranny of winter. Here's where I went yesterday. It was 9 F. So I don't think there was going to be any fishing.

The roads here get plowed pretty quick so the snow is not a major problem. Monday and Tuesday were windy but it wasn't cold (highs around -5C) otherwise that would have been a face-freezer.

In Stamford, CT I laugh at the polar vortex. Been riding 4x/week in 30 mile pre-dawn rides for the last four weeks. Lowest temperature was 6 degrees Fahrenheit. That was a little chilling on the hands going into the second hour but not too bad. Snow really has not been a problem as we had a few 6 inch drops but they were totally plowed out the next day.
Glad the cold spell is now past us and the warmer 18 degree + mornings begin tomorrow.

Going to be in 40 degrees this weekend in the NYC area, I'm going for a 50 mile group ride in the morning. Hopefully I'll be warm enough with just a pair of wool socks and a thin pair of cycling gloves.

I have only bagged one day this year, January 2nd because I wasn't feeling well and the weather folks were predicting face freezing cold -20F.

Been riding daily this week and my tires are very much salted Actually during such weather not only there are less bikes (maybe even less cars) on the road, but drivers seem to be more careful, too.

woohoo - forecast for Toronto area later today is -2c and light winds. A little colder tomorrow morning but then it starts snowing. I'm riding later today and early tomorrow (with the lights) - haven't done back-to-back days for months!
I like winter riding, just can't go out there when it's -28c and windy.

Haven't missed a day due to weather in a decade or so. I wait the rest of the year for ice and snow. Some recent winters were mellow but finally we have a good one - still haven't broken the lowest temp record for riding from the past.

I just got back from a night time winter ride. Was -8c, mild wind, roads were pretty dry despite 15cm of snow on the weekend. Getting another 15cm later, but I got in a ride! It's so calming, and rewarding being out riding at night. You're more in touch with the ride. After sitting at desk all day it's nice to ride. Better than TV. I also love early morning rides, though my new thing is riding at night, after spending time with my daughter after dinner...and I leave just before her bed time when it's my wife's turn to put her to bed.
I have a road bike, Masi steel touring bike I built up myself and a x bike. I use the x bike in the winter. I'm getting a mtn bike to expand my riding this year, was going to sell the Masi but thought this out on tonight's ride...not selling it. Good thoughts on these night/winter rides. Invested time and dollars and I don't want, or need to sell it. Next year I'll get a fat bike for snow/trails and then I'll really be out there (wife's words).

Were your previous rides in the last few weeks as long, and back-to-back days? I ask because I find it tough on the upper body going from short rides to much longer ones. And with it being cold the shoulders and back are tight.

No problems even though I have only ridden a handful of times in the last 8 months. Maybe you need a bike fitting of some sort if you are that uncomfortable.

Made it out today in -17 (-21 with wind chill). Had a few new experiences:
- inside of my ski goggles iced up. I think it's because when I'm breathing in my balaclava the air is going up into the goggle. So I had to take the balaclava below my nose/mouth a few times
- first 10 minutes all was well, next five my fingers got really cold. I had a medium liner (black diamond) and boarding gortex on top. I stopped in a store for 2 minutes...rest of my ride (1hr+) my fingers were fine. I thought that was odd...any ideas?
- chemical toe warmers only last an hour and a bit in that condition!
Not sure I would go out if much colder. Fortunately the streets were clear and only little wind. But it's better than riding the trainer (I was just about to, then thought...screw it, riding outside!).

My lesson today: on the side of the streets there was snow and ice run over by vehicles, with the tire prints. I thought my bike wheels would crush them smoothly when I rode on them. Was caught by surprise when those tire prints turned out to be solid hard, so my wheels were trapped between the prints. Could be dangerous if my bike fell and there was a fast truck next to me.

Good that you noticed that and didn't actually wipe out this time. this past summer I was riding on the soft shoulder and all of a sudden I was in a 5" high by 5" wide rut...couldn't get out (should have braked) and wiped out. No cars around, just a sore hip and dinged Brooks
