And so ends the Best Winter Ever
Everyone around me complained about the cold. They complained about the ice and snow, the slush, and the bad road conditions. But do you have any idea how many happy cross-country skiers there were this season? I had good skiing anytime I wanted it, without traveling more than a block from my own house. Ontario winters tend to be wet and crappy, hovering in around the freezing point, melting and refreezing, leaving dirt and slush but no snow.
This year we had snow, lots of it. And it was truly glorious. The weather was cold enough to stay frozen, but not too cold (-15C, or 5F was about average). I enjoyed the weather with a windbreaker outfit and a thin sweater, and I'm pretty sure that for every person complaining about the cold, a farmer in Manitoba was just rolling his eyes at what we consider a "hard" winter. Assuming his eyeballs weren't frozen solid out there.
It's been about twenty-five years since we had a winter like this, and I may not see another in my lifetime. I'm going to enjoy summer, but I really enjoyed this winter.
No, it's been cold up here and only recently (last week or so) have we been getting wet snow (my wife threw a snowball at me this morning as I was cleaning off the car).
The winter of 2013/4 was the 4th coldest on record for our city (records have been kept here since 1954), the previous colder winter was 1993/4, quite a while ago.
I took the dog for a walk on Sunday on a trail that has yet to be opened by the city so there weren't many footprints on it. However, over the winter, those, like myself, who walked past the "Trail Closed" signs anyway tended to walk in the footprints before us so, on Sunday, when I accidentally stepped off the path into "virgin" snow, my foot didn't feel like it had touched ground, despite my leg being buried almost up to my crotch (and just moments after I took off my gloves because it was mild and I was getting warm).
Yes, this has been quite the winter.
I'm with you. Best winter since I started xc skiing almost twenty years ago. Here's to an encore in 2014/15. :thumb:
