Underwear for winter cycling?

There seem to be all kinds of non-cotton long underwear for winter running, skiing, etc. Has anyone found anything they would recommend to their fellow cyclists? I'm 6' 4", so tall sizes would be even better.

Smartwool merino boxer briefs for me -- they go under PI AmFib tights when it's cold enough, and then I'm good down to 10 degrees or so.

I just bought two pair of Terramer Merino Wool long undies for around $25 a pair at Sierra Trading Post. They are really nice and I may buy some more.

Layers. Wool or polypro, covered with jersey, sometimes covered with more wool or poly, with a wind jacket on top.

I use Performance tights down to about 15 degrees. XL or XXL might be a bit wide around the waist, but it's long enough for my legs (a couple inches shorter than you), and they are still snug around the ankles so they don't get caught in the chain.

I am pretty happy with my US military issue base layers... it is a light poly that is excellent at wicking moisture and being fairly lightweight I pack them as jams for bike touring.

On cool mornings you can crawl out of the sleeping bag and still be warm and bone dry... my bivvy is also goretex and draws away pretty much all moisture.

Silk is good for chilly weather; merino wool as it gets colder; then merino wool over silk.

I cannot wear wool so I use the good synthetics. (Thank you Pategonia and Malden Mills who in the '80s pioneered really good synthetic fabrics.) Now, most of my long underwear comes from REI, though I am still wearing the capilene I bought from Patigonia decades ago.

Synthetics have to be washed more often than wool to keep the stink down, but handle the washing far better and dry much faster. (I line dry all my thermals. They last far longer that way.)

Bike shorts should still be your base layer against your Skin.. unless the actual ride is not much longer than the time it takes you to bundle up for it..

Ie about 5 miles..

Any synthetic. And a plastic bag shoved down the front for wind-proofing.

If this solution did not work for me I would look for merino boxers with a windproof panel.

But this solution does work for me.
