Pedals are threaded such that if the bearing seizes up, the pedal will unscrew itself and fall out.
Folding pedals are a good idea waiting to be invented. The short shaft puts unusual strains on the bearings, and they don't hold up well. Oddly, the best pair I've had, so far, was a very cheap pair I got on ebay.
