Yep, a trade off for convenience. Of course, other things like tensioning the chain with sliding drop outs or an eccentric bottom bracket can make it a royal pain to run a different tooth count, and unless you carry an extra master and links and break the chain, the difference in tooth counts can't be large anyway. Pick your compromise.
