Sora ST-3300 with triple cranks?

Is there any chance that ST-3300 shifters would work with a triple crankset? I'm trying to help my friend switch her bike from a double to a triple and buying new shifters is pricey.

According to Shimano's tech docs (http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830609256.pdf) the 3300 is for doubles and the 3303 is for triples. However, if I downshift gently I can get the shifter to stop at a middle 'click'. I don't want to go to the hassle of installing triple cranks to find the shifter won't work, so I would appreciate any input from you gurus.

Thanks!
