Usually I just say that I started riding fixed in the winter as after about 5 miles, my dérailleurs would be frozen and brakes were pretty much useless. Plus I felt safer going further out into the middle of nowhere when sub zero F temps hit knowing that I had much less stuff to break/freeze up... then ended up sticking with the setup for the rest of the year.
Or I just tell them that it is a Zen thing and they will just not understand, so STFU.
